Completely Power Down Your iPad

When you push the power button briefly on an iPad so that its screen turns off, believe it or not, it is not completely turned off. It will continue to burn its charge at a faster rate than it would when turned off completely. Turning your iPad completely off will save battery for when you need it. If it won't turn off, you can hard reset it or restore it to fix the freeze.

Steps

Powering Down Your iPad

  1. Press and hold the Sleep/Power button. You'll find this button along the top-right edge of the iPad.
  2. Continue holding the button until the Power slider appears. This slider appears on the screen at the top with the words "slide to power off," and sliding it with your finger will turn the iPad off. It may take a few moments for this to appear.
    • If your iPad is frozen and nothing happens when you press and hold the Power button, see the next section.[1]
  3. Slide the Power slider to turn off the iPad. This will power down the iPad completely.
  4. Turn the iPad back on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Power button. You'll need to hold the button for a few moments until the iPad screen turns on.

Hard Resetting a Frozen iPad

  1. Press and hold the Home button. If you have a frozen iPad that won't turn off, performing a hard reset may fix the problem. Start by holding the Home button.
  2. Press and hold the Sleep/Power button while holding the Home button. Don't let go of either button.
  3. Hold both buttons until the Apple logo appears. This may take 20 seconds or so.
    • If you can't get your iPad to reset, even after holding the Home and Sleep/Power button for up to a minute, see the next section.
  4. Power off your iPad once it finishes rebooting. Once the reboot is complete, which may take a while, your iPad will load your Home screen. You can then power it down using the method in the previous section.[2]

Putting Your iPad into Recovery Mode

  1. Put your iPad into Recovery mode when you can't unfreeze it. This should be considered a last resort, since Recovery mode may force you to wipe the iPad and set it up as new.
  2. Connect your iPad to your computer and open iTunes. You'll need to use iTunes to complete the Recovery mode process.
  3. Press and hold the Home and Sleep/Power buttons. After about 10 seconds, you'll see the Apple logo.
  4. Continue holding the Home and Sleep/Power buttons until the iTunes logo appears. This will prompt iTunes to restore your device.
  5. Click "Update" when prompted in iTunes. iTunes will attempt to download the latest update and apply it without erasing any of your data.
  6. Repeat the process and select "Restore" if the update method doesn't work. If the update takes longer than 15 minutes to download and install, you'll likely need to repeat the Recovery mode process and select "Restore" instead of "Update" in iTunes. This will wipe the iPad's data but should get it working again.
  7. Set up your iPad after restoring. After the restore process is finished, you'll be taken through the initial setup for the iPad as if it were new. Enter your Apple ID to restore your iCloud data. If you're connected to the computer with your iTunes library, you can restore any available iTunes backups.[3]
