Direct Message on Instagram
This article teaches you how to send a message directly to another Instagram user. You can use either Instagram Direct or your recipient's profile options to send a direct message, but you can't send a direct message from a computer.

Using Instagram Direct
- Open the Instagram app. If you're already logged into Instagram, doing so will open your Instagram Home page.
- If you aren't logged into Instagram, type in your username (or phone number) and password and tap Login.
- Tap the paper plane icon. It's in the top right corner of your screen. Doing so will open Instagram Direct, which is Instagram's messaging service.
- If you aren't on the Home page, tap the house-shaped icon in the bottom left corner of the screen first.
- Tap New Message. It's at the bottom of the screen.
- If you have a conversation going, you can tap it on this page instead.
- Tap a person whom you wish to message. You can tap as many people as you like.
- You can also type in a username in the search bar at the top of the screen.
- Tap the "Write a message" field. It's at the bottom of the screen.
- Type in a message. If you want to send a photo instead, you can tap the icon to the left of the text field and tap a photo to select it.
- Tap Send. It's to the right of the message field. Doing so will send your message directly to your recipient.
- If you're using an Android, the Send button is replaced by a checkmark.
- If you're sending a picture, tap the arrow at the bottom of the screen.
Using Your Recipient's Profile
- Open the Instagram app. If you're already logged into Instagram, doing so will open your Instagram Home page.
- If you aren't logged into Instagram, type in your username (or phone number) and password and tap Login.
- Tap the magnifying glass icon. It's at the bottom of the screen and to the left of the + icon.
- You can also just scroll through the Home tab until you find a post from the person.
- Tap the search bar. It's at the top of the screen.
- Type in a person's name. As you type, you should see suggestions pop up under the search bar.
- Tap a person's name. Doing so will take you to their profile.
- Tap "..." (iPhone) or ⋮ (Android). It's in the top right corner of the screen.
- Select Send Message. You'll see this option toward the bottom of the menu that pops up.
- Tap the "Write a message" field. It's at the bottom of the screen.
- Type in a message. If you want to send a photo instead, you can tap the icon to the left of the text field and tap a photo to select it.
- Tap Send. This is to the right of your message field. Doing so will send your message to your selected recipient.
- If you're using an Android, the "Send" button is a checkmark.
- If you're sending a picture, tap the arrow at the bottom of the screen.
Tips
- If you receive a message from someone you don't follow, it won't appear directly in your inbox; instead, you'll see it in your "Message Requests" section of the inbox.
- While you can't use Instagram Direct from the Instagram website on a computer, you can download an emulator like Bluestacks from which you can log into your Instagram account and send messages.
