Draw Fabrics

Drawing fabrics are always tricky without knowing the kinds of folds to draw. So, whether you’re an aspiring fashion designer or just an artist willing to learn, follow this step by step tutorial and learn how to draw different kinds of folds on fabric.

Steps

  1. Start by drawing four rounded squares. Each square will contain one particular fold on a fabric.
  2. Draw on the first square an outline of cloth that is clutched by two nails on both sides. These folds are also called diaper folds were there are two support points such as two nails or two hands holding the fabric.
  3. Draw lines on the cloth. Remember to start drawing them from the nail all the way to the middle part of the cloth. This will represent the folds that will take place if a fabric will droop at the middle from two support points.
  4. Next, draw shadows on the fabric. Follow the red arrows on when drawing your shadows on the cloth. The red arrows will indicate were the light is, thus draw your shadows were the light does not fall into.
  5. The second fabric fold is called a drop fold where there is only one support point on the fabric. Draw then an outline of a cloth supported by a nail.
  6. The next step is to draw triangles and triangular shapes were the folds will take place.
  7. Finally, draw lines to emphasize the folds.
  8. To draw the shadows follow the red arrow on were the light is and then draw thin lines beside those folds.
  9. The third fabric folds are called spiral folds. Here, the folds alternate from different directions. On the third rounded square create the outline of the fabric by drawing a square that has wavy and curvy lines on its right and left side.
  10. Draw lines from the right and left side emphasizing the direction of the fold from either side.
  11. Because most of the light is coming from the left side and from the upper right side, draw the fabric’s shadows on the direction were the light is not located.
  12. The last fabric fold is called inert folds. On the fourth rounded square draw an outline of a crumpled cloth.
  13. Next, draw lines that will emphasize the folds on the crumpled cloth. Draw the lines on the middle of the crumpled cloth to create folds that are located only within the middle part of the cloth.
  14. Then draw the shadows of the fabric by following the red arrows.
  15. You can now outline your drawing. Outline by using a thick pen or marker on the rounded squares and a thinner pen on your drawings. Erase your pencil drawings but leave the pencil marks of your drawn shadows on the fabric.
  16. Color your artwork. Use colors that can be varied from light to dark such as light gray to dark grey or even yellow orange to red orange. For your shadows use a color with a darker color and finally erase the pencil marks on your shadows for them to blend on the drawing.
