Draw a Soda Can

Drawing is a wonderful hobby that lets you show others how you interpret the world by bringing your perspective into their view. Sound like a complex way to describe a doodle of your drink? It is, but considering all the work that goes into it, not entirely inaccurate! Most right handed individuals would find this method to work well.

Steps

  1. Sketch an ellipse to make the lid.
  2. Sketch a similar ellipse a little lower than the first one to make the lower and inner lid.
  3. Sketch a slightly larger partial ellipse below the lid to serve as the widest part of the can.
  4. Sketch a vertical line from each edge of the larger ellipse to create the sides of the can.
  5. Sketch another half ellipse to connect the two vertical lines and create the body of the can.
  6. Sketch a smaller half ellipse to create the base of the can.
  7. Add the remaining details for the lid.
  8. Add additional decorations and outline the sketch.
  9. Remove the sketch marks and color the artwork. Include your soda can's brand if needed.

Tips

  • Don't get too bent on drawing deep, chiseled lines on your paper. Light, sweeping motions of the pencil (or pen) produce good results. Less is often more in the world of sketching.
  • Use a pencil with a medium that is not too "grabby". Cheap pencil lead (graphite) tends to have many impurities that make a good sketch hard to come by.
  • Explore different paper types. Often times sketching paper is the most fun. The paper is heavier and more textured causing more interplay between the pencil and the surface. This creates wonderful results!
  • Alternate shading methods include using straight lines to represent curves. This is fairly advanced and best left to another topic!
  • Try a smashed can once this gets to be easy. The wrinkled metal, shiny and dull contrasts will be fun!

Warnings

  • Once it gets the hang of it, your brain will want to do this all the time. Any blank piece of paper could be a potential victim.

Things You'll Need
