Draw an Apple

Drawing still life objects is one of the first projects an aspiring artist must master. The apple is an easy fruit to draw as it has a basic circular shape.

Steps

A Cartoon Apple

  1. Start by Draw-an-Accurate-Ellipse. Your shape should be a little bit wider on each side. Now construct a straight line cutting the ellipse vertically. Make sure that the line is a line of symmetry. Also make sure that the ellipse is a little bit horizontal.
  2. Draw curved lines from the straight line for the top and bottom part of the apple.
  3. Now add a slanting line for the stem. Now add curves on two sides to refine the outline of the basic shape of this great fruit.
  4. Continue your work by adding another stem and a slanting line for the leaf.
  5. Continue with the curve lines for the leaf to make a proper shape.
  6. When you are done with the basic shape of the apple, add two circles for the eyes and an oval for the mouth.
  7. Continue adding more circles for the eyeballs and the highlighting part of the eyes.
  8. Add eyebrows and teeth.
  9. Now based on the guidelines, start drawing the details of the body.
  10. Continue detailing on the eyebrows, eyes and mouth.
  11. Erase all unnecessary lines.
  12. Color the apple.

A Traditional Apple and Slice

  1. First draw a nice circle. Add a line from top to bottom of the circle. The line should be slightly right aligned.
  2. Draw a small oval just above the circle.
  3. For the stem on top of this fruit just draw couple of curve lines. You are done with basic shape of the apple.
  4. OK. Lets draw a piece of apple. For this draw another oval beside the apple.
  5. Continue drawing by another oval inside the first one. This should be slightly small from the other one.
  6. Draw a straight line.
  7. Add a curve line starting from the straight line to the outer oval as shown in the illustration.
  8. Add another oval for the seed.
  9. Now based on the guidelines, start detailing the apple.
  10. Continue detailing for the piece.
  11. Remove all unnecessary lines.
  12. Color the apple.

A Sketch-Style Apple

  1. Sketch in the basic circle shape of the apple.
  2. Add finer details like the stem and the depression.
  3. Draw extra detail like shades, highlights, shadows, etc.
  4. Finished.

An Alphabet Apple

This apple is made using letters from the alphabet. It's a great beginner artist's apple for young kids to try.

  1. Make the body of the apple. Draw a big C. Then draw another C in reverse, almost joined. The C's should be mirror images of each other.
  2. Add the stem. Draw a double "I" (small letters). Put this double "II" on top of the apple, as its stem.
  3. Draw an "O" on top of the "ll". This "O" completes the top of the stem.
  4. Draw on the leaves. Draw a misshapen "D" to form the leaf, alongside the "ll" stem, on one side.
  5. Draw another "D". Again, make it misshapen. This time, place it opposite to the D that you drew before. Also join up the base of the apple. Draw three little lines under it to represent the part of the apple pulled from the tree (calyx and stamen).
  6. That's it. You are done with drawing an alphabet apple.

Tips

  • In a pencil drawing, shading the lighter and darker areas will bring the apple to life.
  • While drawing, make sure to look at your object (apple) more than your paper.
  • In a watercolor, do not give fine details - just an impression of color and values will make your apple shine!
  • Watercolor will bring out many features of the apple
  • Blend the colours to make it look realistic.
