Draw the Face of a Person

A lot of people have trouble drawing faces. There are many different ways. Here's one way.

Steps

  1. Find a face to draw. You can always make one up in your imagination.
  2. Draw the hair. Picture it in your mind. Is it fluffy? Or is more smooth? You should draw detailed lines. If it is fluffy, you'll probably want curved lines inside the hair for detail lines. If it is smooth you'll probably want straight lines.
  3. Think about the smile. Does the person show his or her teeth? Or just the lips? If it is a girl who just shows her lips you could do a sort of flat hump on both sides of the upper lips. But not on the bottom lips.
  4. For the eyes, draw two almonds a little bit apart. If you are drawing a girl, add eyelashes. If it's a boy, add more defined eyebrows.
  5. For the nose, draw a straight line down. Add a semi-circle (half a circle) from the bottom of the straight line.
  6. Add any details that match your person.
  7. Draw some shades on the head if it's a girl. Put two circles or squares.
  8. If they have freckles draw dark shaded shapes on the face. This will give a better effect. Also freckles are a sign of beauty.

Alternate Method

  1. First you draw an oblong or oval. Then draw a line that splits it in half sideways. Then another line that splits that half in half. Draw your lines lightly as they are just guides and will be erased later.
  2. Add Your eyes, evenly spaced, almond shape, along the top line. Nose on the second line. And mouth on the third line.
  3. And then you can draw his/her hair, any kind of hairstyle you want.
  4. Start adding details in the eyes, eyebrows, chin line, hair, and neck.
  5. You can color in drawing if desired.

Tips

  • Sketch your drawing in pencil before using a more permanent drawing medium. You can always erase pencil or trace over it.
  • Focus on the shape of your subjects eyes, chin, and mouth. Those are the most recognizable features.
  • Try to find distinguishable features about the person's face. Does he have a large nose? A strangely shaped chin? Unique eyes? Try to find a trademark feature, and then exaggerate it in your drawing.
  • Try to redraw it, again and again. Practice makes perfect! Try different angles and expressions.
  • Don't stress when you make a mistake, just keep going.
  • Maybe try drawing somebody who means something to you as it will make you want to do better on it.
  • If you find yourself mad because you think it looks bad, take a little break! Think about how good your drawing will soon turn out. Remember the features of his/her face. Then get back to work!
  • You can also draw either a very small or very large nose if you are drawing more of a cartoon drawing.
  • Practice makes a man perfect. Don't settle with the first strokes you make if you don't like them.

Warnings

  • If someone says your drawing isn't good, don't listen just keep trying.
  • Be careful and try to not smudge your drawing if you're putting your arm down. Don't push down hard when drawing and draw lightly so if you need to erase you can.
  • Don't show the person you're drawing the portrait because they might become offended if it doesn't look anything like them
  • You can use a pen but only if you're good at it.
