Find and Mine Diamonds Fast on Minecraft
Diamonds are the very best ore on Minecraft. Diamond tools take the longest time to wear out and are the second fastest tools behind gold but gold has little durability. This article will show you some of the easiest ways to get diamonds in Minecraft.

Steps
Branch Mining
- Consider branch mining. Branch mining is perhaps the most best mining method, and has a high diamond yield.
- Dig down until the Y coordinate is lower than 16.
- It is recommended to craft a staircase or create a 1x2 hole and stand in the middle to avoid falling into lava pools or mobs or water pools.
- You can check your Y coordinate by pressing F3.
- Any Y between 0 and 16 will contain diamonds, but lava is more prominent below Y: 11. Lava lakes occur at 10, so you will be level with the lava, giving you a good chance to get out if you run into some.
- Dig a 2x2 or 1x2 tunnel for as far as you feel necessary (recommended around 20 blocks long)
- Dig a 2x1x1 hole every 2 blocks to mark where your later tunnels are.
- The two block interval is recommended but not necessary, feel free to play around with it to yield better results.
- Mine in a straight line along the indention made previously, for as long as you feel necessary. You should find quite a few ores, if not always diamond.
- There are several variations of this method, feel free to experiment and look up other peoples methods. Feel free to go in open caves but be very careful there could be dangerous mobs or lots of lava.
Strip Mining
- Try strip mining. Strip mining is another widely used method. Though it doesn't yield as many diamonds and other ores, it yields heaps of cobblestone for construction, and creates a nice empty space for your use.
- Dig down until you are below Y: 16.
- Determine how many blocks you want to dig in each direction, let's say for the sake of this tutorial you want to dig a 10x10 box, that is 3 blocks high.
- Dig out the guidelines of your box, and make sure to light it up with torches.
- Dig out the remaining area and store it in your inventory or a chest, though this make take several chests worth of storage.
- Start a new mine, and repeat!
- As with the previous method feel free to play around and experiment.
Lava Mining
- Mine near lava as diamonds are mostly found near it. Just be careful not to fall into it! Bring a water bucket so that if you fall in, you can put out the flames on you and stop the damage.
- Put a platform over the lava and watch out for diamonds.
Tunnel Mining
- Gather about 2 stacks of torches, 1 diamond pickaxe (if available), 4 iron pickaxes, 10 stone pickaxes, 1 enchanted diamond pickaxe or iron pickaxe (with Fortune III), and a stack of melon or other food. Also bring some cooked pork chops or steaks, since they can heal several units of your hunger bar. This can be very useful for quick healing after hostile mob attacks.
- Press F3 and mine down to approximately level 10 (when you see y: 10.000). It can also be obtained on level 12 - level 8.
- Dig out a 5 by 5 by 3 box. Place down a chest, some furnaces, a bed, a crafting table, and other storage tools.
- Mine a tunnel down 25 blocks. Make sure the tunnel is 2 by 2 by 2.
- In that tunnel, mine every 2 blocks that run down 25 blocks. Make sure this is a 2 by 1 tunnel.
- Eventually, you'll cover enough ground. If you see dirt, mine around it. The probability of finding diamonds near dirt is 15%. The probability of finding diamonds near lava is 20%. The probability of finding dirt near lava is 50%. Make sure to keep that in mind, as they play out wisely in factors.
- Place down torches every 10 blocks.
- Enjoy the tons of diamonds you have mined out!
- Remember to always watch out for hostile mobs on any mode besides Peaceful.
Cave Mining
Cave mining is not the easiest way to get diamonds but it is possible.
- Dig down to Y:12 and try to find a cave.
- Look for diamonds. You should run into coal, iron, gold, redstone and if lucky, diamonds. They could be hiding in ravines, lava lakes, water streams and small places.
- Be careful when dealing with creepers. Diamonds can be destroyed in the crossfire.
Big, Long Room Mining
- Make some stairs down to bedrock.
- Once you find bedrock, go five blocks up.
- Once you're there make a big and wide room. Eventually you'll find diamonds (you may need some chests).
Wither Mining
- Enter F3 mode and dig to Y=10.
- Dig a very long hallway. Make sure you light it up.
- When you think your hallway is large enough, make a 4x4x4 room.
- Spawn in the Wither.
- Begin running back down the hallway. The Wither will follow and destroy every block it touches.
- When the Wither has dug almost to the end of the hallway, kill it.
- There should be an almost perfect 3x3 tunnel. Light it up and begin to mine any ores you see.
- Make sure you have armor and know how to fight the Wither!
TNT
This method is more extreme than the other methods.
- Obtain the things needed. You will need at least 2 stacks or more of TNT, 1 of any pickaxe, 1 sword or any combat tools, bucket, flint and steel (or fire charge), torches, stone, and wood.
- Press F3 and dig until Y: 10.
- Make a 1 x 2 path. Don't stop making a path till you find lava.
- Don't forget to put torch in each path.
- If you find a lava, put stone to stop lava. Be careful if you find lava! (If you think that your path needs more length, clear the lava by using a bucket and continue making the path.) Do not use a wooden block over, next to, or near lava! It will catch on fire and if you make a wooden bridge over lava, you will be stranded and will eventually fall in.
- Make an escape way to the top by making staircase to top. Remember!––this staircase must be near the lava path. This will make your escape easier.
- Go to the center of the hallways. Then put TNT from the center hallways until the escape ways. But don't light the TNT!
- If you're ready. Right-click the TNT with your flint and steel (or fire charge) and light it. Escape from that place by using the escape route. The explosion might be large enough that you can search and find lots of ores and diamonds easily. Then go back to the mine.
- Be careful if you mine. There are Zombies, Creepers, and Skeletons trying to stop you. Consider putting all your valuables in an Ender Chest so that you can access your items by placing and opening another Ender Chest from the surface.
Two People
- Ask a friend or brother/sister to help.
- Dig a staircase down to level 12+.
- Split up. Make sure you can hear each other.
- If on easy, normal, or hard this will take longer. If on peaceful, this should take from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Soon you should find diamonds. If not, try to get one more person to help.
Center Mining
- Make a room underground. Make it about 10 by 10.
- On each side, build a stairway about 2 by 2.
- When the Y is between 0 and 16, start digging around.
- Make sure to make it 16 by 20 or more. There will be lava, so bring some dirt or something to plug it. Also bring plenty of torches.
- You will soon find diamonds.
Non-Mining Method
- If you don't want to mine, you can find temples, dungeons, and other places that contain loot. Start by traveling and finding one.
- If it's a temple, avoid traps and take the extra resources. If there are no diamonds, then just try again.
- In dungeons, either destroy or light up the spawner, and loot the chests. If there are no diamonds then at least you can get other stuff, like mossy cobblestone and maybe a future XP farm.
- If you find a chest in the Nether Fortress, loot it without hitting a pigman. There is a rare chance of diamonds or horse armor, and maybe you'll get some other ores and name tags.
- In the rare case of finding diamonds in an abandoned mineshaft, take them! But usually, there's only cocoa beans and bread.
- If you happen to be in a stronghold, search for chests. There is a possibility you'll find diamonds and other loot.
- Try the villages. There is a good possibility you will find diamonds in the chest at the blacksmith's house (the one with the lava and furnaces), or you can simply trade for them.
Tips
- Putting your diamonds in a chest or furnace while mining is a great way to keep them safe.
- Diamond is also sometimes found near lava when mining.
- If you intend to spend a long time mining underground, set up a well-protected and fully equipped base of operations, with bed, chests, furnace, and, most of all, a garden to grow food (watered with blocks of water and well-lit with torches).
- Always keep tons of wood, a furnace and a crafting table so the iron you pick up down there can be smelted into a bar and make an infinite amount of pickaxes without going to the surface.
- If you find diamond in a lava pool, put water or a block in the lava; if you don't, the diamonds can fall in the lava and be destroyed.
- You can survive almost any mob attacks underground with careful use of fences. Skeletons are vulnerable if you can force them to fight at close range, and attack their legs under the fences.
- Listen carefully when you are mining, because you can hear all hostile mobs except creepers. If you are playing on Peaceful difficulty, do not worry about hostile mobs. Just mine to your heart's content!
- Try to find a ravine, as these generated structures are usually FULL of coal, iron, gold, and even diamonds.
- Never keep your diamonds with you in case you get killed somehow. Put them in a chest, preferably an Ender Chest.
- If you enchant your pickaxe to Fortune I, II, or III, you have a higher chance of getting more diamonds.
- When mining in a cave, place blocks along the way as you walk. If you get lost, you'll have markers to show you how to get out.
Warnings
- Beware of lava, as it will incinerate you and your hard-earned diamonds. Use a water bucket to cool it off, or block it off.
- Never dig 1x1 straight down! Mining straight down could cause you to fall into hazards.
Things You'll Need
- Lots of torches (100+)
- A shovel
- A sword
- Plenty of food
- An iron+ pickaxe for mining diamonds, gold, and other ores
- Stone picks for mining coal and iron (optional)
- Bring a stack (64) of dirt or cobblestone so that if you are trapped in a cave you can build up.
- Water bucket for easy lava removing
