Steps
- Use the movement keys (W A S D by default) to move around. You can always change these through the options menu. You can also choose an option that makes your mouse click without pressing the clicking button.
- The 'W' key moves you forward, the 'S' key moves you backward, the 'A' key moves you left, and the 'D' key moves you right.
- Look down and hold down on left-click to break the block underneath you. You will be able to break most blocks, but some require tools.
- Get out of tight spots. Do you feel trapped? Is there simply no way to walk out of the little hole? Just press the W key and the space bar to jump out.
- To sprint, either hold the control button or double tap the 'W' key.
- Press the esc key (escape) to access the menu. From here, you can change the controls and edit other settings such as the music volume.
- Press the esc key again to exit the menu. Now press the E key to access your inventory. This is where you items will be stored. However, you can only carry so many items, so you will need to make some sort of storage unit.
Building Tools and a Shelter
- Build a shelter that is 3x3x3 or 4x4x3. This will make it small so only you and a few other things can fit inside. Now you won't have to worry to get torches so monsters won't spawn!
- Build it exactly where you spawned, or if you don't, make a trail from where you spawned to your house so you can get back to your shelter.
- Punch wood. Punch with your left mouse button (hold) and get wood. Get at least two trees in case you cannot find coal anywhere.
- Make a crafting bench with wooden planks. Open your inventory with the I or E key and place the half of your wood in to wooden planks. With those, fill the crafting area with wooden planks, so that you get a crafting table to make bigger and better things.
- Make basic tools. Right click your crafting bench to make the following.
- Stick (used to make other tools): two wooden planks on top of each other
- Pickaxe (used to mine rock and ores): three wooden planks on the top row and two sticks in the middle of the next two rows
- Look for a mountain or a hill to carve your base.
- Dig into this hill or mountain with a shovel (for dirt) and your pickaxe (for rock).
- Look for coal. On mountains you can often see rock with blackish spots on it—mine this. If you cannot find coal go to step 11.
- Do not mine in your shelter space.
Adding things to your house
- Put your crafting table in first.
- Create a chest. This holds your stuff. Create it with eight wooden planks in a square 3x3 without the middle square.
- Add a door. The door it to keep monsters out. Make one with six wooden planks in a rectangle.
- Put in a furnace (to cook stuff with coal, charcoal or buckets of LAVA): eight cobble stones in a square 3x3 without the middle square
- If you can't find any coal go into your furnace and put wood planks on the bottom and logs on the top to make charcoal.
- Make a bed. A bed is used to spend the whole night in one shot. Place three wool horizontally and three wooden planks below the wool horizontally. The color of the wool does not matter. Note that you can only sleep once the sun touches the horizon. Sleep as soon as possible to minimize mob spawning.
- Make torches for light. Put your coal (or charcoal) on top of a stick to make four torches.
- Wait out the night in comfort.
Tips
- Put torches in the dark places of your base because mobs can spawn in the dark.
- Zombies can only break down wooden doors in hard mode, so any other modes are fine. If you are in hard mode consider a block at the bottom of a doorway, or an iron door, which you will have to carry a pressure plate with you when you go out. And if you get lucky and find iron in an easily accessible and safe area, mine it and smelt it in a furnace to yield iron ingots. Place 6 iron ingots in a vertical rectangle in the crafting table, and get an iron door. You cannot open iron doors without some kind of redstone mechanism. For the first night, a wooden button will suffice. To make a wooden button, place a wooden plank (any kind) in the crafting area.
- Always have a sword or other weapon of choice with you.
- Make your first house near the spawn point in a single player game and store it with useful items. This is handy if you die and cannot reclaim items you have dropped.
- Before you do anything else, dig out a temporary shelter, in case you don't finish your house before night falls.
- Mark your house with something (like a pillar with torches on) so you can see it.
- Place torches around your base.
- Don't open your door! Also, make sure there are no holes in your house. Monsters could get in.
- If you're a brawler, don't fight first. Always search for any armor types like leather or iron.
- Consider making your base in a cobblestone room, or in a stone wall in a cliff. Wood can easily be blown up by creepers.
- Always keep a couple of torches in your mine so the zombies don't spawn in your mine while you're mining.
- Don't go near any monsters and run away as they will follow you! Creepers blow up and can destroy you and your house or any surroundings.
- Don't fight monsters on your first night because you have no armor and lousy weapons.
- When night exactly falls, sleep on your bed right now! Otherwise, mobs start to spawn and go near your base/house. With that, you won't be able to sleep because monsters are around.
- Make sure you complete the roof. If you don't, spiders could climb your house and in through the hole.
- Always carry a weapon and some food in your inventory at all times. They could save your life!
Warnings
- Watch out if you are under a cliff as monsters may fall down unexpectedly on top of you.
- If you are playing on a harder difficulty, be sure to carry food and store valuable items in chests that are located in safe spaces. If you die, your entire player inventory is lost.
- Stay inside at night so you don't get attacked by any monsters. That is when they spawn.
- Don't spend too much time looking for coal because it will get dark!
