Find the Gender of a Name
Determining a person's gender from their name is not as easy as it sounds. Some people, from foreign countries especially, have names that might be hard to figure out. Here's a simple way to make a more informed decision.

Steps
Google Images Method
- Visit Google Images
- Type the name in the Google search box.
- Click the search button.
- View pictures of people with this name. Decide for yourself after seeing the pictures what gender the person is likely to be. Note that this is going to be an unscientific sample and is likely to be highly inaccurate.
Gpeters.com Method
- Head over to http://www.gpeters.com/names/baby-names.php
- Type in the first name in the search box.
- Read the answer. The search engine will give you the 'best guess' gender of the name from its popularity on the Internet.
IndianHinduNames.com Method
- Go to www.indianhindunames.com
- Type in the first name in the search box.
- Read the answer. This utility predicts the gender of the name pretty accurately.
By Language Method
- If you know the person whose name it is, ask them what country they come from or what their native language is, provided you don't know already.
- If you don't know the person directly, try to determine from the sound of the name what language family or exact language it comes from.
- If the language family or language is known to have genders in their language, such as Romance languages (French, Spanish, etc), try to determine if a sound, cluster of sounds, or spelling is usually associated with the gender of a word.
- Examine the name and whatever gender rules you know to try and determine the gender of the name.
Warnings
- These methods work for well for most common names, even across different cultures and nationalities, but for uncommon names it can be difficult to predict a person's gender because many less-common names have no strong gender association.
- Keep in mind not all names have genders or are associated with a neuter gender.
