Get Someone to Wear Their Seatbelt

So you know someone that doesn't wear their seatbelt or even refuses to use it. Here is how you can get them to wear their seatbelt.

Steps

  1. Give them the warnings about not using them. The tragic things that could have been avoided if people had used their seatbelts.
  2. If they tell you that people have been killed by their seatbelts before, remind them that that is a very rare event. The chances of someone being killed by their seatbelt is very low. The chances of someone being killed by not wearing their seatbelt is much higher.
    • In virtually any accident serious enough to require immediate evacuation from the vehicle, such as one that results in a fire, your chances of being alive and conscious without your seatbelt are negligible.
  3. Refuse to give rides to people who do not wear a seatbelt. As the driver of a vehicle you are responsible for the safety of everyone in your vehicle. If there is an accident you could be liable for any injuries or deaths that occur. Tell your friends that it is not personal, you just do not want to risk it. Refuse to let the car move until all seatbelts are properly fastened.
    • If you notice someone removes their seatbelt while the car is in motion ask them to refasten it. If they refuse pull over at the first safe opportunity and wait until they fasten it to resume.
    • Telling them this can help save lives. Help people remember to wear their seat belts, and wear them right now. Let them know that it is their decision.

Tips

  • If it is your car then you make the rules. Be firm.

Warnings

  • Never ride in a car without a seatbelt properly fastened.
  • Do not take greater risks when driving just because your seatbelt is on and you have airbags and anti-lock brakes. These safety features do not make you invincible. As a matter of fact, the airbag inflates at speeds as much as {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}, and these are almost certain to kill you if used without seatbelts. The airbags can hit your ribs, fracturing them and these ribs may rupture your heart/lungs.
  • Most countries have made wearing seatbelts mandatory. You may be fined if a passenger is not buckled up. But remember; Fasten seatbelts for yourself, not the government.
