Hang Five on a BMX Bike

The hang five is a BMX trick. This trick can be used in park, or in street BMX. Hang fives are a nose manual without your feet on the pedals but instead, one is one your front peg and the other is kicking back and forth keeping balance. Hang fives can be used in many different obstacles and can link many combos. You can hang five the deck of a quarter pipe, you could hang five a ledge, you can hang five virtually anything there is to ride upon.

Steps

  1. Start your hang five by rolling forward at a moderate speed keep the pedals level to the ground as if you were to do a bunny hop (j-hop).
  2. Lifting the back wheel lift's your back wheel up, like you are jumping in the air, and jump off the pedals as you do so. Place the foot that is normally forward on your front peg and the other foot beside you.
  3. Balancing To stay in the hang five pump with your free foot. If you are about to flip forwards, kick your leg back. If the back end is about to drop, kick forward and push forward on your bars.

Tips

  • The key to learning hang fives is being able to stay very far forward without flipping.
  • Learning to hop over your bars in the event of flipping forward is very useful.
  • If you currently have trouble with hang fives the back end drops a lot or you put both feet down when you are about to flip. Stop try another hang five with more weight in the front, if you are about to flip try kicking your leg back. If you still are almost going straight into the ground, push your bars down and jump over them. This will help you get more comfortable balancing your hang five.

Warnings

  • When learning this, make sure you push your bars down when you hop over them. If you do not your feet could catch causing your body to go forward.
  • Wearing gloves while learning hang fives is a good idea because it saves your palms from getting skinned if you ever do fall forward.
  • Skinning your palms on cement would ruin your riding for as long as a week, and who wants that to happen?
