Perform a Wheely on a Mountain Bike

Do you want to impress your friends by doing a good wheelie on a mountain bike? Well here's how.

Steps

  1. Find a flat, grassy area. Once you have found a good place, switch into an average gear 1-3 (experiment to find out what gear is best for you).
  2. Start to bike at about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} (or slower).
  3. Pull your front tire off the ground as high as you can. It is sometimes easier to do this with a bike that has front shock absorbers.
  4. As soon as you have the front in the air at the top of the wheels ascent pedal as hard as you can.
  5. If you feel you are going to far backwards, gently touch the back brakes, if you feel you are coming back down pedal harder!
  6. Practice Practice Practice!

Tips

  • Don't try on pavement until you are sure that you won't have a major screw-up.

Warnings

  • It is best to start out with platform pedals, so you can bail out easily.
  • If you pedal too hard right when you get going, you might flip onto your back.
  • Helmet required!
  • Wear shoulder, elbow and knee pads, if possible.
  • If you feel that you are going to fall back, you can always put your feet down while still holding the handle bars and run with the bike. Be sure not to let the front wheel hit your face.

Things You'll Need

  • A bike with at least 6 gears.
  • Helmet
  • Pads, Knee and elbow (opt)
