Heel Toe Downshift
Learn how to downshift the proper way.
Steps
- Learn how to drive a manual-transmission vehicle first.
- Start by finding a back road or less busy area.
- Start driving until you reach about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} in third gear.
- With your right foot, start to brake.
- When the speedometer shows you are going about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}, press the clutch with your left foot, shift to neutral and release the clutch.
- While still braking, twist your heel onto the throttle and press it lightly.
- Press the clutch and shift into second gear.
- Keep on the brakes, let out the clutch.
- Keep practicing until it becomes a smooth operation.
Tips
- The amount the throttle needs to be pressed will vary depending on the particular vehicle and gear change. As a general rule the higher the revs are in the initial gear the harder the throttle needs to be pressed.
- The pedals need to be close together, with the brake and gas at or near the same height. Unfortunately, most American cars are not set up like this, so heel-toeing will be more difficult.
