Pull Start a Manual Vehicle

This article explains how to pull start a manual vehicle.

Steps

  1. Select a suitable vehicle. It must be a manual vehicle and you can tell since it has 5 different gears on the shifter. It needs to have a manual transmission and be bigger than the manual vehicle.
  2. Find a jerk strap or a log chain. This will be used to pull the car.
  3. Attach the strap or chain. Hook one end of the strap or chain around the frame of the manual vehicle.
  4. Take the other end of the strap or chain. Hook it to the rear of the vehicle that is going to pull the manual vehicle
  5. Get in the vehicles. Once you have both ends of the strap or chain hooked up have one person get in each vehicle. The manual vehicle driver has to put the vehicle into 1st gear and press the clutch in and hold it there. When the person in the manual vehicle is ready the person in the bigger vehicle put it in drive.
  6. Have the bigger vehicle speed up to about 15 to 20 mph. Then have the manual car release the clutch so the tires can turn the engine over. Remember that the manual vehicle has to be ready to press the brake and push the clutch in as soon as the engine starts so you can unhook the strap or chain
