Host a Hawaiian Party

Do you want to host a Hawaiian party? You've come to the right place.

Steps

  1. Invite plenty of friends for dinner. Decorate the invitations with palm trees, hula girls, or surfers.
  2. Ask all the guests to wear Hawaiian-style (flower printed or "island" themed) shirts, board shorts or long pants (depending on how laid-back or formal your party is), and either flip-flops or shoes.
  3. Get tropical decorations from party or department stores. Depending where you live, tiki torches may be hard to find. You can substitute them for any kind of outside light such as lanterns.
  4. Give your guests a lei as they arrive. If you are planning to make real flower leis, you should make them the night before the party. If not, paper leis are great as well.
  5. Set up outside (weather permitting) - if possible, you could make a palm tree, and cut out a few cardboard pieces to look like the ocean, and a big table for everyone to sit at and eat their meals.
  6. Get a CD of Hawaiian music or download Hawaiian .mp3s from the internet. For relaxing moods, you should probably play Kapena or Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. For more of a "up-beat", play Three Plus or Ten Feet. Research on local artists, such as Pepper and Jack Johnson.
  7. Serve Hawaiian food: pineapple, grilled mahi-mahi (otherwise known as dolphin fish) or chicken, other fresh fruits, and juices. You can also cook rice, as it's a staple carbohydrate for Hawaii.
  8. Dance with grass skirts! Find someone who can teach you all a few hula moves.
