Create a Watermelon Beach Party

Enjoying a day at the beach deserves a special carved watermelon to celebrate the occasion. A centerpiece like this one, with fun cool desserts, will cool you off even on the warmest days.

Steps

  1. Make the base. Use an oblong seedless watermelon, cut a slice off the bottom to create a flat, stable base.
  2. Make waves. Draw lines in a wave design with a sharp pencil or thin marker halfway up the watermelon. Continue this design all the way around the watermelon.
  3. Cut the watermelon. With a knife, carefully cut along the line of the wave design you just made. Then, pull away the upper portion of the watermelon.
  4. Scoop out the flesh of the watermelon. You can use an ice cream scoop or a large spoon. Save it for salad.
  5. Create a water scene. Using chilled blue gelatin in a plastic container to make a pool of “water” and place it in the watermelon bowl. Fill in around the “water” with fruit salad cut into fun shapes and balls.
  6. Decorate your beach scene. Arrange new, small beach-themed toys and small plastic dolls toward the edge of the watermelon bowl to make the beach scene. Garnish the sides with drink umbrellas and plastic palm tree swizzle sticks, and add gummy fish to the top of the salad and gelatin to complete the scene.
  7. Enjoy your new creation.

Tips

  • You can also add small "pools" around your large watermelon pool using smaller plastic containers.
  • You could also line the inside of the watermelon with plastic wrap and fill the entire thing with blue gelatin, but it may be difficult to keep this looking "neat."
