Learn Broadcasting Online

It's possible to learn broadcasting online. Here's how to go about doing so.

Steps

  1. Take a free voice audition on line to see if you have the basic vocal skills to be qualified for on air work. There are established broadcasting schools that offer this free service.
  2. Use your voice more often. Every voice has minor flaws or annoyances to some portion of an audience. It is the goal of any announcer to grow their audience as large and quick as possible. One of the means of doing that in modern society is to use your voice as an option to writing.
    • Many announcers and broadcasters today are opting for the internet as a new way of "being heard." The key is not to be labeled a nuisance voice before you ever get going.
    • Practice makes perfect but where you practice is even more important. Use podcasts and forums that allow audio responses instead of blogs. People in general would rather listen then read. Use your voice in chat rooms instead of writing. Add sound files to your text if you cannot chat out loud.
  3. Submit your recordings to on air announcers and ask for tips, you would be surprised how friendly the radio community is today. they want listeners.
  4. Find a broadcasting school that offers home study or distance education. These schools have been around a long time and have a lot of connections in the industry, especially if they have a large alumni spread throughout the country. The tuition cost is often 50% less than schools that have classroom lessons.
    • Make sure you sign up with a school and not a mentor program where you are just paying money to have someone introduce you to a local DJ. These operations are not certified schools. Schools have a state oversight commission and are inspected regularly.
    • Ask about the course length. You can not develop your on air voice in two to three months. Look for a school that will offer you real training and voice evaluation for all broadcasting formats, news, sports, reporting, talk, etc.

Warnings

  • Stay away from organizations that cannot provide you with a legitimate internship and always verify that they are a real school. If they say they are a school and they are not, it is good grounds to get your money back later.
