Make Bhel Puri
Bhel puri is a toasted puffed rice dish common around Mumbai, India. It can be served as a side dish or as a snack. This recipe is a hit with the children, making it a good evening snack.
Ingredients
- 1 cup puffed rice
- 100gm roasted Bengal gram
- 100gm peanuts
- Cucumber, cut into small pieces
- 100gm boiled potato, cut into small cubes
- 1 medium onion, minced
- 1 medium tomato, finely chopped
- Coriander leaves (for dressing)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon chat masala
- Pinch of turmeric powder
- Pomegranate (optional)
Steps
- Dry roast the puffed rice. Do not brown the puffed rice––dry roast just enough to make the puffed rice crisp.
- Set down a big bowl. Add the ingredients one by one, as follows:
- Puffed rice
- Roasted Bengal gram
- Peanuts
- Cucumber, cut into small pieces
- Boiled potato cubes
- Minced onion
- Finely chopped tomato
- Salt
- Chat masala
- Lemon juice
- Turmeric powder.
- Mix the contents of the bowl. Combine well.
- Dress up the dish. Add the coriander leaves as garnish and additional flavor.
- Serve.
Tips
- The veggies and fruit added provide a sensation of freshness, as well as rejuvenating the body.
- The base of the recipe is puffed rice. You can even try small breadcrumbs, crushed pappadis and sev (fried chickpea flour vermicelli).
- You can also add tomato ketchup to it for a different flavor.
- If wished, add small quantities of dried fruits, such as almond, pistachios, dried grapes, walnuts (roasted and cut into small pieces), to add to the nutritional value of your dish.
