Make Bhel Puri

Bhel puri is a toasted puffed rice dish common around Mumbai, India. It can be served as a side dish or as a snack. This recipe is a hit with the children, making it a good evening snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup puffed rice
  • 100gm roasted Bengal gram
  • 100gm peanuts
  • Cucumber, cut into small pieces
  • 100gm boiled potato, cut into small cubes
  • 1 medium onion, minced
  • 1 medium tomato, finely chopped
  • Coriander leaves (for dressing)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon chat masala
  • Pinch of turmeric powder
  • Pomegranate (optional)

Steps

  1. Dry roast the puffed rice. Do not brown the puffed rice––dry roast just enough to make the puffed rice crisp.
  2. Set down a big bowl. Add the ingredients one by one, as follows:
    • Puffed rice
    • Roasted Bengal gram
    • Peanuts
    • Cucumber, cut into small pieces
    • Boiled potato cubes
    • Minced onion
    • Finely chopped tomato
    • Salt
    • Chat masala
    • Lemon juice
    • Turmeric powder.
  3. Mix the contents of the bowl. Combine well.
  4. Dress up the dish. Add the coriander leaves as garnish and additional flavor.
  5. Serve.



Tips

  • The veggies and fruit added provide a sensation of freshness, as well as rejuvenating the body.
  • The base of the recipe is puffed rice. You can even try small breadcrumbs, crushed pappadis and sev (fried chickpea flour vermicelli).
  • You can also add tomato ketchup to it for a different flavor.
  • If wished, add small quantities of dried fruits, such as almond, pistachios, dried grapes, walnuts (roasted and cut into small pieces), to add to the nutritional value of your dish.
