Make Simple Peas Pulao

Pulaos are a very famous dish in India. There are many varieties of pulao––the one here is made from green peas. This recipe is very easy to prepare, as it doesn't have too many ingredients and can be cooked quickly, making it ideal for the busy person who loves Indian food.

Also known as pilaf.

  • 500 grams/17.6 oz cleaned and washed rice
  • 100 grams/3.5 oz fresh green peas
  • 3 sliced onions
  • 2 black cardamoms
  • 2 green cardamoms
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 3 tablespoons ghee
  • 2 cups water

Steps

  1. Add the ghee to the pressure cooker.
  2. Add crushed black and green cardamoms.
  3. Saute the ingredients.
  4. Add the Thinly Slice an Onion and mix well.
  5. Add salt and mix well.
  6. Add garam masala and mix well.
  7. Stir fry the onions till they turn a dark brown color.
  8. Add the rice and fresh peas.
  9. Mix all of the ingredients together.
  10. Add water and mix well.
  11. Cover the lid of the pressure cooker. Cook under pressure until there are two whistles. Turn off the heat.
    • Alternatively, read the instructions accompanying your pressure cooker and use the timing or signals it suggests. See Tips below for timing suggestions if not using an Indian pressure cooker.
  12. Open the lid of the pressure cooker.
  13. Mix the cooked pulao with the ladle very lightly. Take care not to crush the rice grains.
  14. Serve the pulao with the Liven Up Indian Raitas.

Tips

  • Missvickie.com has tested Indian whistling pressure cookers and estimates that you need to allow about three minutes of pressure cooking per whistle.[1] This is for those of you opting to use a European or American style pressure cook (with jiggle or other type tops that don't whistle).

Warnings

  • Do not leave a pressure cooker unattended. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions with care.
