Make Paneer Makhani (Indian Cottage Cheese and Butter Based Dish)

This yummy dish is very good for cold winter nights... serve with a side of sliced onions and raita.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 kg paneer, cubed (homemade or store bought)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 cups tomato puree
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 Tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt - to taste
  • 3/4 cup cream
  • a few strips of green chillies, cut lengthwise, for garnish

Steps

  1. Heat 1 tsp oil and {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} butter in a wok.
  2. Wait until the butter melts, add cumin seeds and turmeric.
  3. After the seeds start sputtering add tomato puree, red chili powder, garam masala powder and cook over high heat, stirring a few times, till the mixture comes to a boil.
  4. Simmer till the puree splutters.
  5. Add the salt and paneer and turn around a few times till coated with the puree and heated through.
  6. Add the cream (you can use yoghurt instead of cream also) and turn around a few times till well blended and hot.
  7. Garnish with the green chillies and serve immediately.



Tips

  • If serving later, add the cream and shut off the heat, and reheat and proceed with the rest, later.
