Make Cinnamon Cookie Ornaments

What's a better way to than decorate your tree than making homemade ornaments? This recipe will make adorable little ornaments, that can be used as Buy Hanukkah Gifts for Kids, and fill your house with a wonderful scent!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (8 oz) ground cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp. of ground cloves
  • 1 Tbsp. of ground nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup of applesauce (plain)
  • 2 Tbsp. of glue (non-toxic)

Steps

  1. Gather your supplies.
  2. Sprinkle some cinnamon on the area you are working on, so you don't have a stuck on mess to deal with later.
  3. Mix the cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg together in a bowl. Stir in the glue and applesauce. If the mixture is too wet add cinnamon, or applesauce if it's too dry.
  4. Knead the dough together until it holds together well.
  5. Roll out your dough to about a quarter inch thick.
  6. Take the cookie cutters and cut as many shapes as possible from the dough you've made. If you want to add details into the dough (such as by using a little pin to poke holes in) now is the time.
  7. Poke a small hole with a straw about a quarter inch away from the top of the shape so you have something to hang it by.
  8. Place the cut shapes carefully on waxed paper on top of cookie sheets. They can be fairly close together, but make sure none touch otherwise they will dry together.
  9. Set the shapes out to dry somewhere, preferably somewhere where they won't be disturbed by nosy pets, children, or spouses.
  10. Allow them to cure and harden for a day or two.
  11. Once dry decorate them, you can glue decorations on, paint with "puffy" paint, decorate with glitter, etc.
  12. Once all your decorations are on and dried, slip a ribbon through the hole at the top. Tie the ends together so you can hang it on your tree! Alternatively, slip an ornament hook through the hole.
  13. Hang the ornament on your tree and enjoy your creation for years to come!

Tips

  • You can also give the ornaments as gifts.
  • Hand them out at the office, or let your children give them to their teachers at school.
  • If the ornaments will be around little kids, use non-toxic glue and decorations.
  • Some suggested cookie-cutter shapes: bells, bears, Christmas trees, candy canes, wreaths, gingerbread men/women.

Warnings

  • If you have cats, there's a chance they'll manage to get into these ornaments. Take appropriate precautions.
  • Keep these ornaments on higher branches. Less likely an animal or child will get into them, since they are not in reach.
  • Don't eat the ornament!
  • Don't eat the dough!
