Make Jam Heart Sandwiches

Jam (or preserves) heart sandwiches are simple to make, yet look striking on any party table. They're great for Valentine's Day, for children's parties, for picnics and for afternoon tea parties. They also make a fun snack any time.

Ingredients

All Hearts Jam Sandwich

  • Sandwich bread of choice (as much as you need)
  • Jam or preserves of choice
  • Cream cheese (spreadable)

Fairy Heart Jam Sandwich

  • Sandwich bread of choice (as much as you need)
  • Jam or preserves of choice
  • Sprinkles

Toasted Heart Jam Sandwich

  • Toasting bread, as many slices as you wish
  • Jam or preserves, thick variety

Steps

All Hearts Jam Sandwich

  1. Cut out the large hearts first. For each sandwich, you'll need 2 slices of bread cut into large heart shapes. Repeat for as many sandwiches as you need.
  2. Cut out the inner heart. Use the smaller heart cutter to cut out a heart shape dead center of the large heart. Only do one piece per sandwich though, as only the top piece needs the heart hole.
  3. Spread a generous serving of jam or preserves across the bottom heart. Repeat for each sandwich you're making.
  4. Spread a thin layer of cream cheese across the top heart. Repeat for each sandwich you're making.
  5. Carefully place the top heart onto the jam heart layer, cream cheese side facing downward. Press together gently but avoid squeezing the cream cheese out.
  6. Arrange the jam heart sandwiches on a plate. Serve immediately or keep covered and chilled in the refrigerator until needed.

Fairy Heart Jam Sandwiches

  1. Prepare the bread slices in exactly the same way as for the "All hearts jam sandwich" above.
  2. Spread a generous layer of jam or preserves across the base layer.
  3. Place the heart hole layer on top.
  4. Fill the hole with sprinkles. Be generous! This is the fairy's heart.
  5. Arrange on a serving plate. Serve immediately or keep covered and chilled in the refrigerator until needed.

Toasted Heart Jam Sandwich

Work quickly on this one; the toast will cool down quickly.

  1. Toast the bread slices.
  2. Spread one layer of toast thickly with delicious jam or preserves.
  3. Press a heart shape out of the middle of the other piece of toast.
  4. Quickly and gently place the toast with a heart hole in the middle of it on top of the jam toast layer.
  5. Place on a single serving plate. Serve immediately.

Tips

  • The cream cheese layer in the first method is optional, if you'd rather not include it. Just use more jam.
  • Add a little icing/confectioners sugar to the cream cheese and mix through before using for a sweeter touch.
  • Icing or confectioners sugar can be sprinkled over the top of the sandwiches for a sweet touch if desired.
  • Always cover sandwiches if leaving chilled for a little time in the fridge; this will prevent fridge odors from transferring into the sandwiches.
