Make Korean Style Ramen

If you are wanting to try a new variety of ramen, curious, or just want some Korean style ramen, read on to find out how to make a cheap, simple meal that will fill you up.

Ingredients

  • 1 package instant ramen
  • 2 cup water
  • A pinch garlic powder
  • A pinch chilli powder
  • A pinch pepper
  • green onion
  • Toppings (spam, hot dogs, seaweed, egg etc.)

Steps

  1. Get your favorite type of ramen. Use Samyang or Nong Shim, or any Korean brand for authenticity. Cheaper, thinner deep-fried noodles such as Top Ramen are not recommended.
  2. Boil about 2 cups of water, more or less if you like plenty of soup base or little.
  3. (Optional) Add a pinch of garlic powder, pepper, chili pepper to water.
  4. Snap the ramen noodles in half and add them in with any leftover flakes, this makes it easier to stir and boil faster.
  5. Add soup base and vegetables that come packaged after you put the ramen in.
  6. Stir frequently. You don't want the flavor to bunch up in one place, or the noodles to get stuck to the pot.
  7. Add anything you find that will be good to the ramen! Favorites are: Spam, cut-up hot dogs, dried salted seaweed, and egg. Also I love adding a squeeze of lime just to bring up the flavor of the broth a bit. Don't forget to add green onion; it gives the ramen a fresh taste.
  8. Pour into a bowl, serve with chopsticks and enjoy with your favorite kimchi or banchan.

Tips

  • For a twist, add a slice of cheese (any kind, even though American processed cheese is traditional), right before you eat, while it`s still hot. Don`t try to stir it in. The soup will get nasty. Just enjoy it in first few bites.
  • You can substitute half of soup with Dashi broth (Asian seaweed broth), for fresher lighter version.
  • Add things like sausage and spam a bit earlier; you want them to absorb heat from the boiling water or else you will have to eat cold meat.
  • Make sure to keep stirring, or else the ramen won't be as good, and some ingredients may fail if you don't stir.
  • When putting in an egg, follow these steps: Crack an egg into a small cup or bowl and stir it, then before you pour the ramen into a bowl, pour the egg into the ramen and stir, if you don't stir the egg will get stuck to the pot.
  • If you want to, you can add a touch of sesame oil to give your ramen a great flavor.

Warnings

  • Don't add too much water, or too little water. Two cups is recommended. Too much water will destroy the flavor, basically you will eat water noodles, and too little water will just bunch up all the flavor in one area, or even burn the noodles from pot contact.
  • When you're cooking more than one ramen at a time don`t double the water. Use a little less.
