Make a Harvey Wallbanger

According to legend, the Harvey Wallbanger was named after a Californian surfer called Harvey who drank so many Screwdriver drinks topped with Galliano that he bounced and banged around as he tried to make his way out of the bar![1] Yet another tale states from Hawaiian bartenders claims that it was named after an Irishman named Harvey who ricocheted down the corridor of his hotel room after a night out.[2] And it's also possible it was invented in Chicago in the 60s![3]

Whichever story of origin you choose to believe about this cocktail, a Harvey Wallbanger is an incredibly easy drink to make and moreover, it's a pretty drink to enjoy.

Ingredients

Glass method

  • 1 ounce (30 mL) vodka
  • 1/2 ounce (15 mL) Galliano
  • 4 ounces (120 mL or 1/2 cup) orange juice, freshly squeezed

Cocktail shaker (by measure) method

  • 1 measure vodka
  • 3 measures orange juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1-2 teaspoons Galliano

  • Orange slices
  • 1 cherry (optional)

Steps

Glass method

  1. Place several ice cubes into a highball glass (tall glass).
  2. Pour vodka and orange juice into the glass.
  3. Stir. Use a Make a Rum Swizzle Cocktail stick to stir it with.
  4. Add the Galliano but do not stir. Use the back of the spoon to float the herbal liqueur on top.
  5. Serve. Decorate with the fresh orange slices and add a swizzle stick.

Cocktail shaker method (by measure)

  1. Place half the ice cubes into the cocktail shaker. Put the remainder of the ice into the glass.
  2. Pour the vodka and the orange juice into the shaker.
  3. Shake well for around 30 seconds (half a minute).
  4. Strain the mix into the glass over the ice cubes.
  5. Float the Galliano on top using the back of the spoon.
  6. Serve. Decorate with the fresh orange slices and add a swizzle stick. Add a cherry too for extra decorative effect.
