Steps

Making Single Serving Banana Cake in the Oven

  1. Preheat your oven to 330 degrees Fahrenheit (about 165 degrees Celsius). Make sure you know how to check to see the oven is heated properly. Some ovens make a noise, like a beep, when they're done preheating. If your oven does not indicate when it finishes preheating, use an oven thermometer to make sure the oven is heated adequately.[1]
    • As a single serving cake does not take long to mix, it's a good idea to wait a few minutes between turning on the oven and starting your cake. This way, you can put your cake in the oven right after you prepare the ingredients.
  2. Find an oven-safe mug. You need a standard sized mug that's safe to cook in the oven. It should say somewhere on the label if the mug can be placed in the oven. Once you've found a suitable mug, spray it down with non-stick spray.[1]
    • If you can't find a mug, you can use a ramekin roughly the same size as a standard sized mug instead.
  3. Add your ingredients to the mug and mix thoroughly. For this cake, you will add all the ingredients at once. Mix the ingredients together until your batter is smooth and consistent throughout. You do not need to use an electric mixer. You can use a fork or a small spoon to stir.[1]
  4. Bake for 16 to 18 minutes. Start off baking your cake for 16 minutes. If the cake is not done after 16 minutes, cook your cake for an additional minute. Keep adding a minute onto the cooking time until your cake is done.[1]
    • When the cake is done, it will spring up after you press down on it. You should also be able to insert a fork or toothpick into the cake and have it come out clean.

Making Coffee Cake in the Microwave

  1. Find a microwave safe mug. You will be cooking a coffee cake in the microwave. Find a mug that's microwavable prior to mixing your ingredients. The mug should say whether it's microwavable somewhere on the label.[2]
    • You can also use a ramekin similar to the size of a standard sized mug.
  2. Soften the butter in the microwave, if it's chilled. You will need to soften the butter if you got it straight from the refrigerator. Butter that's at room temperature has already been softened. This recipe calls for slightly softened butter. Place your butter in the mug. Microwave it for 10 to 15 minutes. You do not want melted butter for this recipe. You want butter that is slightly softened.[2]
    • Start off microwaving your butter for 10 seconds and then check it. You should also keep an eye on the butter while it's microwaving. Make sure that your butter does not begin to melt.
  3. Add the sugar and egg. Stir in the sugar and egg until you have a light, fluffy mixture that's even throughout. You do not need to use an electric mixer. You can simply use a spoon or fork.[2]
    • As you're working with small amounts of ingredients, this shouldn't take more than 30 seconds to a minute.
  4. Stir in the sour cream and vanilla. Again, make sure to stir until the mixture is even and creamy. Use the same spoon you used to stir together the egg and sugar. Make sure to stir until you have a smooth, creamy batter.[2]
  5. Add the dry ingredients. Dry ingredients include the flour and baking soda. Stir these into your cake. You may want to add the dry ingredients in small increments, as this can make them easier to mix into the batter.[2]
  6. Microwave the mug until the cake is cooked. The precise baking time varies depending on your microwave. Bake your cake for 1 minute and then check on it. If it needs to cook longer, cook it for 10 more seconds. Keep checking on the cake every 10 seconds until it's cooked.[2]
    • Your cake will be ready when you can stick a fork in it and have it come out clean.
    • The cake will be very hot when you remove it from the microwave, so make sure to let it cool for a few minutes before eating it.

Making Brownie Chocolate Mug Cake in the Microwave

  1. Prepare a coffee mug for cooking. Find a microwave safe mug in your kitchen. Spray the inside of the mug down with non-stick spray.[3]
  2. Whisk together the sugar and melted butter. In a small bowl, use a small fork or wire whisk to blend the sugar and butter. Keep blending until the mixture is smooth and even throughout.[3]
  3. Mix in the egg, milk, oil, and chocolate or vanilla extract. Use the same spoon or fork to blend these into the sugar and melted butter. Keep mixing until your batter is smooth and even. This should not take long, as you're working with a small amount of ingredients.[3]
  4. Add the dry ingredients. The dry ingredients are the flour, baking powder, cocoa powder, salt, and espresso powder. Add these ingredients to your bowl and mix until they're well integrated into the batter.[3]
    • It can be helpful to add the dry ingredients in intervals. This will allow them to mix more smoothly into your batter.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chips. Pour your chocolate chips into your mixing bowl. Then, gently fold them into the rest of your batter.[3]
    • To fold your ingredients, place the chocolate chips roughly in the center of the batter. Then, use a small spatula to circle around the chocolate chips.[4]
    • Continue circling, moving closer to the center with each circle. Eventually, the chocolate chips will be smoothly folded into your batter.
  6. Microwave your cake. Transfer your batter to your mug. Place the mug in the microwave for a minute and 30 seconds. Microwave for an additional 30 seconds if your cake is not done after the initial 90 seconds.[3]
    • When your cake is done, you will be able to stick a fork in it and have it come out clean.
    • This cake will look like it's overflowing when it's done cooking. Don't panic. This is normal and the cake will settle slightly once you get it out of the microwave.
  7. Finished.
