Open a Locked Car With a Mobile

A casual thought exercise might lead you to believe that you can unlock your car using a phone recording of your car key's remote button. Unfortunately, this is an urban legend — unlocking your car remotely with a phone is impossible.[1] That's because radio waves emitted by a car key's remote can't travel over a phone. Some people have been fooled into believing this trick works when they ask their spouse or friend to press the remote button from far away while recording it with their phone, not realizing that the remote button is, in fact, close enough itself to open the door.

If you've locked yourself out of your car and you're searching for an answer, you're better off trying the following tips and tricks:

Steps

  1. Open the car door with a clothes hanger. You're essentially replicating the action of a tool called the slim jim.
  2. Unlock your car with extra string. If you have a little extra string lying around and an older car, this technique might just work. It involves tying a slipknot, fitting the slipknot into the door jamb, sliding it down over the lock, and then lifting it back up.
  3. Call a roadside assistance service, such as AAA. Free roadside assistance comes baked in to many new car warranties, so try anyway if you're not a member or haven't signed up.[2]
