Protect Your Computer With a Firewall

A Firewall is a program that protects your computer from malicious hackers that try to access your computer from the internet. Using a firewall is highly recommended for all computer users.

Steps

  1. Chose a Firewall
    • Choosing the right Firewall is an important step. You will need to decide if you want a simple and easy-to-use firewall, or a firewall where you can configure everything it does.

    • Check Point Software makes Zone Alarm Firewall a free firewall for home users. It is a very powerful firewall but it may not work on older hardware.
    • Comodo Firewall is a free for home use firewall from the Comodo Group. With this firewall you can change a lot of settings, but is not best for people who want a simple to use firewall.
  2. If you do not want to use a free firewall and have some money you can go buy a full security suite, almost all security suites now have firewalls built in.
  3. After choosing a suite install it according to the company’s instructions. These instructions can normally be found from the firewalls website.
  4. After the firewall installs it will most likely require a reboot. Reboot the computer and watch for any pop-ups from the firewall.
  5. Read any pop-ups that appear on the computer after the restart, accept all of them from programs you use and trust.
  6. If you see any pop-ups appear and you don't know what they are for go to your favorite search engine and type in the name of the program. Look for a source that says what the program does and decide what action to take upon what the website says.
  7. Your computer should now be secure with the firewall, when it blocks any hacker attacks it will pop-up and alert you

Tips

  • If the first firewall you chose does not work for you, you can uninstall it and try a different one.
  • Only use one firewall at a time.
  • If a program is acting weird after you blocked a program go and unblock any files that are used with that program.

Warnings

  • Back up your computer before installing any security suite.
