Put a Clutch in a Chevy 1500

Start with step 1 to put a clutch in a Chevy 1500 truck.

Steps

  1. Remove the rear drive shaft. Go ahead and remove the four-wheel drive shaft also.
  2. Make sure that you have a transmission jack under the transfer case. Remove the linkages for the four-wheel drive. Undo the wiring harness from the casing. Then remove the five bolts that hold the transfer case to the transmission. Make sure that the transfer case stay level so that the fluid doesn't run out.
  3. Remove the the shifter and the shifter boot from the inside of the truck.
  4. Place a jack under the transmission and remove the skid plate and the cross member. Make sure that you have the jack is secure under the transmission.
  5. Remove the wiring harness and remove the bolts that hold the transmission to the motor. Lower the transmission from the motor.
  6. Remove the throw out bearing from the input shaft in the transmission. Clean the shaft and inspect the shaft for damage. Also check the splines on the input shaft for damage.
  7. Remove the pressure plate from the flywheel. Then remove the clutch disc. Check the flywheel for heat marks in it. Check the ring gear around to make sure that their are no teeth missing. Make sure that you follow all torque specs for your vehicle.
