Change Your Oil in a 2017 Ford F350 Super Duty Truck

Changing your own oil will save money and time. You will no longer need to schedule an appointment or waste hours waiting for your truck to come out of the shop. Once you follow these easy steps, you will be able to change your oil on your own.

Steps

  1. Gather what you need. You're going to need a few things to change your oil.
    • Your truck
    • Floor jack or jack stands
    • Oil filter WIX filter 51372
    • Oil Pennzoil High mileage SAE 5W-30 1.25 Gal
    • Wrench 16mm
    • Oil pan
    • Gloves
    • Flashlight or kickstand light
    • Funnel
  2. Park and turn off the truck. Make sure it's parked in a safe and dry place. The truck will need to be parked on a flat surface. Get everything you need to change the oil (view list above). It's easier to change the oil if the oil is warm. If you have not driven lately, start the truck engine and let it idle for 5-10 minutes. Then turn it off so it’s not dangerously hot. If you have been driving the truck, turn it off and wait 20 minutes.
  3. Put gloves on. Some F350 models sit up high and others sit low. If the truck you're working on does not sit high and you are unable to get under the truck, please use jack stands or floor jacks. (Safety first!) Set the parking brake.
  4. Get your oil pan, 16mm wrench, and WIX filter, and place them beside the front tire on the driver's side. You will want to lay down next to the front door and slowly slide yourself under the truck (headfirst). Once under, you will see the belly of the truck. In the middle between the front tires, you will see the oil filter and oil drain plug.
  5. Place the oil pan under the oil plug. Use the 16mm wrench and start to loosen the plug. Slowly turn the wrench (you will meet some resistance). You will see black oil to start leak as you loosen the plug.
  6. Place the plug where you can see it on the ground. Let the oil drain until the old oil stops flowing out of the hole.
  7. Once the oil has stopped moving, place the oil pan under the filter, located on the left side of the truck. Loosen the filter slowly and oil should start to drip from the top of the filter. Place the old filter on the oil pan. Wait until all the oil has dripped into the oil pan.
  8. Get a new filter and screw it into place where the old one was. You want to make sure you screwed it in as tight as possible. Put the plug back into the bottom of the oil pan, tightening it with the 16mm wrench. Make sure it is as tight as you can get it. Move everything from under the truck and get out from under the truck.
  9. Open the truck hood and locate oil fill. Remove the cap.
  10. Place funnel inside the oil fluid hole.
  11. Open your Oil Pennzoil High mileage SAE 5W-30 1.25 Gal and start dumping it into the funnel and filling up the engine.
  12. Dry off your oil dipstick and put it back into the new engine oil. Pull it back out and check and see if your oil is full enough. If it not, put more oil into the engine until the oil level on the dipstick reaches the fill line. Put your dipstick back and make sure it closed tightly. Close your engine cover.
  13. Clean up the mess and take your old oil to AutoZone or any automotive store and they will recycle it.

Tips

  • Other basic items to consider? Safety glasses because they can protect your eyes from oil. Cushion or creeper to lay on while on the ground. Laying on the ground for long periods of time can cause back pain. These can help reduce pain while working under the truck.
