Register a Facebook Username

Registering a username on Facebook can help friends and other people more easily identify your profile. A Facebook username is an personal link to your personal Facebook Timeline you can create within a few simple steps. This article will show you how.

Steps

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Go to the Facebook home page.
  3. Click the Home button’s drop-down arrow from the top right corner of the screen.
  4. Click the “Account Settings” option from the drop-down list.
  5. Locate the “Username” section of the page that follows. Towards the very far right of that Username line, you’ll see an Edit link.
  6. Click the “Edit” link.
  7. Click into the “Username” field.
  8. Type your proposed new username into the box.
  9. Wait for the checkmark to the right of the box to say that the username is not in the database yet.
  10. Click into the “Password” field.
  11. Type in your account password.
  12. Click the “Save Changes” button to save.

Tips

  • You can change or modify your Facebook username at any time by repeating the steps above, depending on availability. Facebook usernames were originally permanent as well, so keep in mind the current policy allowing modifications is subject to change.
  • If the username you'd like is already taken or otherwise unavailable, try a variation of the name.
  • Facebook usernames are first come, first serve. To increase your chances of registering the username you'd like, follow the above steps as soon as you create an account.
  • Usernames are not case sensitive.

Warnings

  • While no longer permanent, it is still best to avoid selecting a random or inappropriate username you may not want to be stuck with should the policy change unannounced.
