Remove Unwanted Exterior Lights from Your Vehicle
This article explains how to remove unwanted add-on exterior lights from your vehicle. This article does not discuss how to remove built in lights that came with the vehicle.
Steps
- Locate the lights to remove and unmount, leaving them hanging by their wires.
- You have two options. You can leave them and take the bulbs out or remove the entire thing. If you choose the latter option, continue on reading. If you want to remove the bulbs, see tips.
- Turn the lights off.
- Remove bulbs.
- Cut wires going to fixture.
- Locate the switch in the vehicle. If the switch is part of the vehicle, skip to step 10. If the switch was added as a result of a kit that was installed or similar, and it controls nothing else, follow the following steps. Otherwise skip to step 10.
- Remove the mounting for the switch.
- Disconnect switch and dispose.
- Cap wires with wire nuts.
- Cap wires where the lights were.
- If they were on their own circuit, remove the fuse and place in the spare fuse section in the panel.
- Fix any holes from the switch and lights that are visible.
Tips
- Check to make sure they have their own circuit before removing the fuse.
- If removing the bulbs, remove the bulbs and store. Reinstall Lens.
Warnings
- Electrocution Hazard! Although most cars run off 12 volts, you may still get shocked if you don't have any knowledge of circuits!
- Do NOT under any circumstances remove the headlights!
