Remove a Scratch from a Ceramic Stove Top

Glass-ceramic stove tops are used for surfaces of both modern radiant and convection ovens. They are called glass-ceramic because they have both glass and ceramic properties, but they are often referred to as either simply glass or ceramic stove tops. The cook top surface is both hard and able to handle quick changes in temperature. Although the surface is flat and can be cleaned fairly easily with a shallow metal scraper, acidic or alkali cleansers can damage their heat-resistant finish . While some deep ceramic scratches can not be removed, there are a few methods that can help to remove shallow scratches or make them less noticeable. Read on to find out how to remove a scratch from a ceramic stove top.

Steps

Remove Shallow Scratches

  1. Turn off your ceramic cook top burners before beginning to clean.
  2. Wait until the stove has cooled to clean up spills and scratches. However, if there is a sugar spill, clean immediately, as it will pit if melted.
  3. Scrape excess food with a metal scraper. These are available at most hardware stores. Scrapers are a short, flat metallic blade that can lift food without causing scratches.
  4. Mix baking soda with water to create a loose blend. Stir well, until it is the consistency of pudding. It should be fairly dissolved, instead of grainy. If there is not enough water in the mixture, it can be too abrasive on the stove's finish.
  5. Dip a soft cloth in the baking soda substance.
  6. Rub the area gently with the soft cloth.
  7. Wipe the area clean with the other end of your soft cloth until it is dry. Buff gently with the dry cloth. Small scratches should be removed with this process.

Remove Deep Scratches

  1. Find the cream that came with your stove top. Read the instructions on the bottle, to ensure you follow the stove's instructions.
  2. If you cannot find your cook top cleaning cream, buy a metal polishing cream at a drugstore, hardware store or supermarket.
  3. Apply the stove top cream that came with the stove top to a cotton ball.
  4. Rub it around the scratch in a circular motion.
  5. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
    • If the scratch remains, apply a small amount of the cleaner or metal polish to a non-scratch, non-abrasive sponge and rub gently over the scratch.
    • Only scrub for 30 seconds or less. Excessive scrubbing can create a dull spot.

Warnings

  • Don't drag glass or metal pans across the surface of a ceramic stove top. They will scratch the surface.
  • Don't use abrasive sponges or cleaners on ceramic stove tops. They can scratch the surface and leave a dull finish.
