Run a Good Hand Car Wash
A car wash is a great way to raise money for a charity. Here's a step-by-step guide to make it great!
Steps
- Plan: Have a date and time in mind. Find a good location easily visible to passing motorists. Produce posters to place around town and at least two signs for your specific location during the car wash. Set your prices. Ask friends to help (the more the merrier). Have a container to hold the money.
- Set your price. £5 is average ($7 or $8), but charge more for big vans or trucks.
- Look at the long-range weather forecast. You'll want to have a nice day, one when most people are off work. Schedule a rain date, too, an alternate day if the weather turns bad.
- Secure the location. Ask permission to hold your car wash at an easily visible location. Let the owner know you're raising money for charity. Select a spot with good drainage so that all the soapy water doesn't flood the area.
Tips
- Keep each wash under 15 minutes. Drivers won't want to wait longer than that.
- Sell cold (even hot) beverages while drivers are waiting.
- Wear clothes and shoes you don't mind getting wet (and soapy).
- Be sure to clean up the area once you're done. Have a trash receptacle available. Impress the owner so much that he/she would let you use the place again sometime.
Warnings
- Don't hold your carwash behind a fence or building. You want your signs and your workers to be visible to traffic.
- Three workers should be your minimum.
- If it's a sunny day, you may want to bring lots of sun lotion for anyone who wants it.
