Send a Private Message on Twitter
1. Open the Twitter app.
2. Tap Messages.
3. Tap the new message icon in the top right corner of your screen.
4. Select a recipient by typing in their name and then tapping their username.
5. Tap Next.
6. Enter your message.
7. Tap ⎆ send.

Steps
Sending a Direct Message (Mobile)
- Tap the Twitter app. If you haven't already, login when prompted, or you can learn how to make a Twitter account here.
- Tap the envelope icon. It's located in the top-right corner of your screen.
- Tap the new message icon. It's the chat bubble with a plus sign in the bottom right corner of your screen.
- Type in a user's name.
- Tap on their username. Their name will appear in the text box.
- Tap "Next."
- Type your message in the text box. You can also add pictures, GIFs, or emojis to your message by tapping on the appropriate icon.
- Tap "Send." The send button is located to the right of the text box and will not appear until text or a picture, emoji, or GIF has been entered into the text box.
- Depending on the user's notification settings, the user may or may not receive a notification that they have a new message.
Sending a Direct Message In a Web Browser
- Go to www.twitter.com.
- Log into your Twitter account. If you are already logged in, you will be sent straight to your Twitter feed. If you need to sign up for a Twitter account, you can learn to make a Twitter account here.
- Click on "Message." It's located on the top-left of the screen between "Notifications" and the Twitter icon.
- Click "New Messages."
- Type in a user's name. Depending on the user's settings, you may only be able to message people who are already following you.
- Hit ↵ Enter.
- Click "Next." Located in the bottom right corner of the window, clicking "Next" will send you to the message window.
- Type in your message. The text box is at the bottom of the window.
- You may also add emojis, GIFs, or photos by clicking on the corresponding icon next to the text bar.
- Click Send. It is located in the bottom right corner of the window and will become clickable once you have entered a message or added an emoji, GIF, or photo.
- Depending on your user's notification settings, they may or may not be notified that they have received a message.
Tips
- Once you send a direct message to someone, if they reply back, you can simply click the dialogue box beneath their reply to continue the conversation privately.
- You can also send a direct message from your profile page by clicking the envelope icon.
Warnings
- Sending message to people you don't follow may be considered spam and may cause them to unfollow or block you.
- You can't retrieve a direct message after you send it/
