Template:CopyeditbotDing dong ditching, also known as ringing and running, knock a door and run, or knock knock gingerbread is a fun (yet cruel) neighborhood prank that's been around for ages. It involves ringing the doorbell of a random house and running away before you get caught. [hide]Steps
- Warm up. Do some stretches, jog on the spot, drink some water, wear light, comfy, but not too bright clothing. Get ready to run!
- Choose the home you want to ding dong ditch. Choose wisely, though. It can help you if you choose a ditch-worthy house. Some features to look for are windows that aren't low, bushes, easy access to the backyard, and anything you may find helpful. However, make sure the home you choose doesn't have low windows (especially near the door), a dog outside, no trees or bushes, and anything else you may think is hazardous. Try to play this game at night. During the day, it is pointless for two reasons. One, the point of the game is to get someone mad, and it won't be too bad for the person at the house if they just answer the door and no one is there; it will be just a slight annoyance, unlike when you do it at night when you wake someone up. Two, it is easier because it would be harder to see you at night.
- Come up with a good plan. If you are caught, remember that if the person doesn't know you, don't talk to them, just run. If playing by yourself, ring the doorbell a few times and run. If playing with one friend, one of you rings the doorbell, one knocks. If playing with more than one friend making a group of three or more people, one person rings the bell and everyone else knocks on the door. A good plan is "I wanted to ask you something, but I forgot so I don't want to take up your time" and smile.
- Put your plan in action!
Tips
- Make sure they're home by looking for open windows, open garage doors, lights, cars in the driveway, etc.
- Make a good get away plan with your friends. The last thing you need is for the person to spot you.
- Watch out for cameras. Some houses have cameras on them. If you knock on their door and they find no one at the doorstep, they can check the footage of the camera to see who it was.
- You can record your ding dong ditch as long as you aren't the doorbell ringer.
- As soon as you ring the doorbell, it may be funnier to put something on the doorstep like a bag of dog poop.
- Some people do it in a method like this: one person rings and everyone else does nothing. What is the point of that? Remember that everyone should have a role. They can be the ringer or a door knocker (look above and you can see that you can have a ringer and multiple door knockers at the same time to maximize sound), or maybe even the person who records the whole thing. Just make sure if you are recording that it will actually be viewable, and not blurry like a lot of DVD videos.
- Even though it may be exciting and funny to ring and run the house a few minutes or seconds after you just did it, it's unwise. If you do it to the same house a second time, your victim will be more annoyed or angered and be more likely to search for you.
- Try to make it fun for the people you are ditching by leaving something behind, like a teddy bear, cupcakes or candy!
Warnings
- Don't start running down the sidewalk laughing. Be as quiet as possible, go behind a fence or tree. Then wait until they shut the door and then run off.
- Be careful what neighborhood you do this in. If it's a ghetto, someone might get shot. If it's a wealthy neighborhood, the home owner might get furious and depending on how rich they are, they may even have security cameras. Your best bet is a middle class neighborhood that you're familiar with.
- If you don't have a good enough plan, you might get caught. Some people may circle their houses if they're mad enough and you might get caught.
- Don't use a bike as your faster way to get away from the house. It takes longer to pick the bike up off the ground and get on.
- You may want to do this to someone you know, so if you do get caught they might not get as mad.
