Stop a Bike Going Down Hill in Rainy Conditions

This is how to stop a bike when going down hill in rainy conditions. There are only 4 steps.

Steps

  1. When riding down hill on a bike in rainy conditions, use both brakes on the bike. If the back brake is out then gently use the front brake. The front brake is more effective then the back brake on most bikes. If you shift your weight back and use both brakes your back brake will better grip and you won't go OTB applying the front brake.
  2. Back-pedal the bike. It will create some friction between the back tire and the gears (only if you have brakes that engage when you pedal backwards).
  3. If all else fails then get off the bike and walk.
  4. if you are really a decent rider you can lock the back brakes and slide carefully down hill (put your feet down to stabilize yourself.

Tips

  • Back-pedal slowly to get more friction
  • Lean back but keep you lower body on the seat so that mainly all of your weight is on the back tire to prevent flipping over the handle bars.

Warnings

  • Always wear a helmet when riding a bike.
