Move From a Standing Start on a Bicycle
This method will help you get moving from a stop sign or light without falling over!
Steps
- As you slow, clip out of your pedal (or remove from the toe clip) on your preferred side.
- When you stop, rise from the saddle, holding your weight on the clipped foot and transfer your weight to the unclipped foot as it touches the ground.
- Whilst stationery, more your clipped foot to 2 o'clock (a little below the top of the stroke, to the front of the bike)
- As you move off, bend your clipped leg and straighten it as you rise above the bicycle. This will start the bicycle forward. Try not to push with the other foot - this is how you can slip and fall.
- As the bike begins to move forward, sit on the saddle and place your other foot in the clip or clip into the pedal and continue to ride
Tips
- One other tip is to ensure you are in a suitable gear to move off BEFORE you actually stop.
- If you find you're in the wrong gear - set your changer, lift the rear wheel by lifting your saddle and pedal with your clipped foot until the chain is in the correct position
- ALWAYS wear a helmet. You might trust your own abilities, but don't give any one else the benefit of the doubt. They won't get hurt - you might!
