Move From a Standing Start on a Bicycle

This method will help you get moving from a stop sign or light without falling over!

Steps

  1. As you slow, clip out of your pedal (or remove from the toe clip) on your preferred side.
  2. When you stop, rise from the saddle, holding your weight on the clipped foot and transfer your weight to the unclipped foot as it touches the ground.
  3. Whilst stationery, more your clipped foot to 2 o'clock (a little below the top of the stroke, to the front of the bike)
  4. As you move off, bend your clipped leg and straighten it as you rise above the bicycle. This will start the bicycle forward. Try not to push with the other foot - this is how you can slip and fall.
  5. As the bike begins to move forward, sit on the saddle and place your other foot in the clip or clip into the pedal and continue to ride

Tips

  • One other tip is to ensure you are in a suitable gear to move off BEFORE you actually stop.
  • If you find you're in the wrong gear - set your changer, lift the rear wheel by lifting your saddle and pedal with your clipped foot until the chain is in the correct position
  • ALWAYS wear a helmet. You might trust your own abilities, but don't give any one else the benefit of the doubt. They won't get hurt - you might!
