Survive a Severe Grounding

Sometimes, you will have to deal with a severe grounding. If you are unable to talk your way out of things, then you will just have to deal with it.

Steps

  1. Make sure that you have a backup plan for everything. Contact a couple of friends and ask if you can borrow some of their stuff for a while. Make sure you have extra stuff around your room such as a music player or some books to read. Things like building that model you got for a birthday or Christmas you never thought of doing, like stuff that would pass the time. If you are aware of the punishment beforehand, make a stash of electronics, such as an old game boy or Mp3 player.
  2. Maintain communication with your friends. One of the most important things that you can do is to make sure that you talk to them at school or put notes in their locker if you can't do that.
  3. Enlist a couple of friends to help you get some new items in return for a percentage of the purchase. When you are grounded, it is hard to get new stuff. Your parents might keep you from going to the store. This is always a good opportunity to save some money too.
  4. Be nice to your parents. Yelling at them every time you see them isn't going to help. Don't be overly nice so that it's obvious that you are trying to get out of it, but just follow their terms of your grounding and try not to upset them, or they might increase the length of your grounding. Tell them you understand why you are being punished. If you think it might make them reduce the grounding, do extra chores around the house. This just might get their respect back.
  5. Just deal with it. It's the most important thing to remember. It will all come to an end eventually, and you will survive. Just try to find something that your parents will let you do. Work on your drawing or read a book, or if all else fails, do some homework or some schoolwork. Be positive and tell yourself it's not going to last forever, and Do Not Think It's Entirely Your Fault! You really are good inside.
  6. Learn something from this experience. If you make a mistake trying to sneak out while grounded, or get caught with your iPod, or on the computer or TV, figure out why your parents caught you and be a little sneakier next go-round

Tips

  • "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime." A helpful piece of advice for next time you decide to do whatever it was that caused you to get grounded.
  • If your parents ask you to do chores while you are grounded, just do them and don't moan about it. You might learn from your mistakes.
  • Have a backup of all of your computer files and essential electronics. If your parents find out you're using them, you're in trouble. Sure, the old junky CD player in your basement is not as good as your iPod, but it is better than nothing.
  • Make sure that you keep in touch with your friends, so you won't be forgotten. You're parents probably won't allow you to use the computer, so no Facebook until you served your punishment.
  • Actually if your parents don't allow you to use the computer at home, try finding a place near your home, like a library, teenagers activity centre or even friends' place if their parents aren't there or that you can trust them on not telling that you have been to their place. If you can't, bad luck.
  • Hide your money, keys, octopus cards. If parents find out you have them, they might take them away, which makes life much harder for you.
  • Look on the internet for a good revenge! It's satisfying! But don't get caught with your revenge, or else life will be horrible for you, and you might get a longer punishment. so either don't get caught or blame it on a sibling who is present at the time.

Warnings

  • Don't keep thinking about how much fun everyone else is having. Instead, be as productive & positive as you can be within your environment. It will help you avoid depression and bring a sense of empowerment to your situation.
  • Try not to get in even more trouble while being grounded.
  • Don't say bad things about your parents. That's even worse.
  • Do not argue. That makes things worse.
  • Hide your electronics from your parents at all costs. TV, computers, iPods, cell phones, digital cameras, video cameras, video game systems are examples of things you might be grounded from. Treat it like school.
  • Don't let parents track you.
