Switch Your Bike from Fixed Gear to Single Speed

Fixed Gear and Single Speed Bicycles have been all the rage recently. The Flip Flop Hub offers riders the choice between riding a fixie, and a city cruiser. There is one problem though, figuring out how to make the switch! In this article you will learn a step-by-step transformation.

Steps

  1. Prepare all the tools needed for the job. All this will really include is a friend and a hex wrench set.
  2. Loosen the little chain tensor nuts a good amount using your wrench, but do not take them all the way off.
  3. Loosen both axle nuts.
  4. Push the wheel forward to create slack in the chain. Lift the chain off of the crank, and slip the back wheel off the frame. #*Remove the chain from the back wheel so the wheel is free from the bike.
  5. Flip the wheel over, and reattach the chain to the Freewheel Cog. This will be on the opposite side of the wheel. Once you attach the chain to the Cog, slide the wheel back onto the frame.
  6. Push the wheel towards the handle bar, creating slack in the Chain when you have the wheel back on the frame. This will allow you to put the chain back on the crank.
  7. Tighten the chain tensor nuts to a point where the chain is tight on the crank. Make sure to tighten them evenly on both sides, so that the wheel is not uneven within the frame.
  8. Tighten the big axle nuts slowly. Make sure to alternate and tighten both equally.
  9. Take your new fixed gear bike for a spin around the block.
