Tame Unruly Hair
Taming unruly hair can take some doing, especially if you were not graced with easy-care hair. Stop looking enviously at all those people with "perfect" hair and start tackling what you can do with what you do have. Long or short, you can find a style and design that will work for you and stay that way.
Steps
Short Hair
- Be constructively creative with short hair. Purchase specialty headbands and/or barrettes. For unruly, curly hair you may wish to tone the curls with "no-frizz" products first.
- Brush upwards on both sides of the head from the temple, pulling that section of hair together in the middle of the scalp and applying a barrette.
- Be sure that bangs are brushed and/or curled as they are the easiest part of unruly hair to keep in place.
- Use a curling iron for straight unruly hair to apply some fluff and style. If curly, you may wish to utilize a bit of hair gel and warm water and gently massage and squeeze hair to give a well maintained curly look.
Long Hair
- For long hair do all the above. In addition, you have a few more options such as having your hair French braided, pulled into a bun on top of your head, or a ponytail. Usually the longer the hair the less "unruly" it becomes because of the weight of your hair.
- Wash your hair with conditioner, and shampoo, And rinse your hair with cold water. This will reduce frizz
- Blow dry your hair, while brushing you hair roots to ends to reduce volume
- Tie your hair into a messy bun! The messy look is in fashion!
Tips
- For young children, do not wash their hair daily as you will be stripping the natural oils. Use "no more tangle" products and especially utilize children hair care products; they are designed with gentler product ingredients.
- For curly or frizzy hair, invest in "no frizz" products and always use conditioner.
- Invest in a quality hairbrush that will not pull and rip your hair. A beauty salon can help you with the best choices for your type of hair.
- Never use shampoo/conditioner mixed products as they offset each other. The conditioner invariably gets "washed out" by the soap in the shampoo. Always use a separate conditioner.
- Make a pre-wash deep conditioner by blending 1/4 cup of milk and 1/2 cup of mayonnaise. Apply to DRY, unwashed hair for 20 minutes. Rinse well, then wash and condition your hair.
- If possible, add a bit more salt to your home soft water conditioning system. It makes a tremendous difference between harsh, hard water and soft water. If your home does not have a water softener, buy and use fresh spring water to rinse the conditioner from your hair.
Warnings
- Do not iron your hair. Do not overuse hot heat products. Always try to wash your hair when you have time to let it air dry as much as possible as opposed to blow drying. Heat burns!
