Use Turn by Turn Navigation on an iPhone or iPad

This article teaches you how to use your iPhone's or iPad's Apple Maps app like a GPS to get turn-by-turn instructions.

Steps

  1. Open your iPhone's Maps. This app resembles a road map. You'll likely find it on the Home Screen.
  2. Tap the "Search for a place or address" field. It's near the bottom of the screen.
  3. Type in your destination's name or address. As you type, location names will pop up below the text field.
    • Make sure you correctly type the name of the location.
  4. Tap the location's name. It should appear below the text field.
    • You can also tap Search in the bottom-right corner of the screen if no options pop up below the text field.
  5. Tap the blue Directions button. It's near the bottom of the screen.
  6. Tap a transportation option. These options are at the bottom of the screen and include the following:
    • Drive - Default. Gives you a route best-suited to driving.
    • Walk - Customizes your route for pedestrian travel.
    • Transit - Shows you directions based on nearby bus routes.
    • Ride - Lets you access ride services like Uber or Lyft. You must have the pertinent apps on your iPhone.
  7. Select a route you'd like to take. You can do so by tapping one of the blue lines on the map.
    • You won't be able to do this if you selected the "Ride" transportation option.
    • In some cases, your selected transportation option won't be available in your location.
  8. Tap GO. It's the green button near the bottom of the screen. Doing so will map out your route with each turn listed at the top of the screen; as you progress along it, your directions will update.
    • You can also tap the bar at the bottom of the screen and then tap Details to view a turn-by-turn list of the trip's directions.

Tips

  • The Maps app tracks your movement and will suggest alternate routes if you are slowed down by traffic congestion.
  • Rather than manually locate a place, you can also ask Siri “How do I get to...” to bring up directions.

Warnings

  • Always pull over or have a passenger control your iPhone or iPad while you drive when using turn-by-turn navigation.
  • Make sure Location Services is turned on in your iPhone's Settings in order for turn-by-turn navigation to operate properly.
