Use a Hopper in Minecraft

Hoppers are useful blocks in Minecraft. A hopper collects dropped items from around it or out of a container above it, and holds them or places them in a container under or attached to the side of it.They can be used to automatically collect dropped items from monsters killed in a trap, create automatic cooking machines, or almost anything you can think of. To use a hopper, you will need items to put into it, two containers (e.g., chest, furnace), and a redstone power-line to deactivate it.

Steps

  1. Craft a hopper.
  2. Decide what you want to make with it and where it should go.
  3. Place the hopper next to or above the container you want it to put items into by clicking on that container.
    • If you are putting the hopper next to the container and are opening it instead of placing the hopper, hold shift and click.
  4. Place the container you want the hopper to take items from above it.
  5. Lead a redstone line or place a lever on a block next to the hopper.
  6. Turn the redstone on or flip your lever to deactivate it.
  7. Place items in the top of your machine.
  8. Turn the lever back off to start it going.

Example: Automatic Fish Cooker

  1. Place the chest on the ground.
  2. Walk to the left of the chest and hold the hopper.
  3. Shift-click on the chest to place the hopper attached to the chest.
  4. Place a furnace on top of the hopper by shift-clicking.
  5. Place another hopper on top of the furnace by shift-clicking.
  6. Fill the furnace with a stack of coal.
  7. Place raw fish in top hopper.
  8. Collect cooked fish in bottom chest.



Tips

  • Remember, you don't need a container on the top. If you toss an item onto a running hopper, it will suck it up!
  • You don't need redstone connected to the hopper unless you want to turn it off.
  • If a hopper is connected to an item next to it, but a container is under it as well, it will send every other item to each container.
  • You can tell where a hopper is sending items by the position of the funnel on the bottom.
