Use the iPhone Speakerphone

Using your iPhone's "speaker" function during a call boosts the sound volume and allows you to speak generally rather than directly into the mouthpiece. You can enable it from within a call, or you can enable it while listening to voicemails!

Steps

Using the Speaker During a Call

  1. Tap your "Phone" app. This is the green box with a white phone silhouette in it.
  2. Initiate a call. You can do this from your "Recents" tab, or you can tap a contact's name and tap the Mobile button with a phone graphic on it.
    • You can also use the speaker when someone calls you.
  3. Tap Speaker. This is in the top right corner of your phone's button grid.[1]
    • Your phone must be a foot or so away from your face in order to display the grid buttons.
  4. Adjust your speaker volume. You can do this with the volume + or - buttons on the right side of your phone.
  5. Tap Speaker again. This will disable the speaker, allowing you to talk normally again!

Using the Speaker to Listen to Voicemail

  1. Tap your "Phone" app. This is the green box with a white phone silhouette in it.
  2. Tap Voicemail. You can find this option in the bottom right corner of your screen.[2]
  3. Tap a voicemail message.
  4. Tap Speaker. This is in the bottom left corner of your screen.
  5. Tap the "Play" triangle. Your message should now be playing at full speaker volume!

Tips

  • Using the Speaker when you're driving or otherwise occupied is a good way to maintain a conversation without diverting your attention too much.

Warnings

  • Refrain from using the speaker in public or quiet spaces.
