Add Friends on Facebook
Friends are the backbone of your Facebook experience. Adding friends gives you more people to interact with and a richer news feed full of differing opinions and thoughts. Facebook has streamlined the friend request process, making it quicker than ever. Read this guide to find out how to increase the size of your friend list.
Steps
Sending a Request
- Find the person you want to add. You can use the search bar at the top of the Facebook page to search for anyone that uses Facebook by name or email address. Click on the result to load that person’s timeline.
- You can also navigate to a person’s timeline by clicking on their name in a post.
- See how you know them. When you visit a person’s timeline, you can see what mutual friends you may share. This can be useful for remembering how you know someone.
- Click on the Add Friend button. The Add Friend button is located in two different places on the person’s timeline. You can find one button to the right of the person’s name at the top of the page. You can find the other button at the top of the timeline, in the “Do you know <name>?” box. This button is green.
- When you click the Add Friend button, it will change to the Friend Request Sent button. Clicking on this button will open a menu of actions you can take, such as canceling the friend request or suggesting more friends to your new friend.
- Wait for the person to accept your friend request. Enjoy connecting with your new friend!
Accepting a Request
- Receive a friend request. Depending on your Facebook settings, you may receive an email when a friend request is sent to you. If you don’t have email notifications enabled, you will see a message in your notifications section of Facebook, and a red icon will appear under the Friends button at the top of the page.
- Click Confirm to add the person as a friend. The Confirm button will change into a Friends dropdown menu. You can place the new friend in a specific list, choose which updates you want to receive, or remove them from your friends list.
Tips
- If you don't recognize or know the person, it's best to send them a message to ask who they are. Always look for "mutual friends", as they may be a friend of one of your friends.
