Apply Reflective Tape to a Car Inconspicuously

Reflective tape can make a car much more visible at night. But some don't like its look during the day. It blends in with chrome nicely.

Steps

  1. Be sure that your car has chrome strips, because this works only if the car has a chrome strip on the side.
  2. Buy a long, thin strip of reflective tape, for instance {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} wide. The prismatic kind (with a grid of small plastic polygons) is much better than the silver-particle kind. Each piece should be as long as the car (or as the chrome strip).
  3. Wash and dry, but don't wax the car.
  4. Trim the end of the tape along the reflective polygon boundaries for a neat appearance and apply it entirely within the chrome strip. The absence of a free edge will keep it from peeling. Apply it along the bottom edge of the chrome strip so that up close one looks down on the chrome and doesn't notice the tape.
  5. Do this for each door and the parts of the side that extend past the doors.
  6. Do the front and rear too if you like. The rear should have mostly red reflective tape, not white.

Tips

  • White tape is brightest.
  • Do not apply reflective tape to chrome that is not in good condition, that is fake chrome paint on plastic, or that is exceptionally valuable.
  • Apply reflective tape to an inconspicuous location, let it sit a few days, and peel it off to check whether it will damage chrome.

Warnings

  • Do not attempt to make your car look like a police or emergency vehicle, which is illegal.

Things You'll Need

  • Long, thin reflective tape.
