Avoid Making Idle Threats to Your Kids

When you are frustrated or stressed, you may threaten your misbehaving child with consequences you won’t carry out. Just about every parent has done this. However, idle threats can lead to further behavior problems as the child grows up. To avoid making idle threats to your child, follow through with consequences, be consistent, think before you react, and try to find alternate discipline approaches.

Setting Clear Expectations

  1. Follow through with consequences. Idle or empty threats are common, and children generally know that. They won’t respond or change their behavior if they don’t believe that their parents will follow through. This makes your child stop looking at you as an authority figure. When you say you are going to punish them or give them consequences, make sure that you do that.[1]
    • By giving your child a lot of idle threats, you can negatively impact the relationship that you have. This can cause discipline problems later in life.

  1. Avoid making extreme threats you could never carry out. Often, idle threats are extreme and over-the-top. The parents probably would never carry out the threat because it may harm the child. Don’t tell your child that you will do something that you would not feel comfortable following through on.[3]
    • For example, an extreme idle threat may be, “If you don’t stop, I’m going to leave you here” or “If you don’t eat, I’m not going to let you have any more food today.” These are threats that you wouldn’t carry out on your children.

To help you avoid this, try to think through what you are saying before you say something to your child.     • For example, if your child won’t stop playing outside and come inside for dinner, don’t say, “If you don’t come in I will throw your dinner away.” Instead, tell your child, “It is time to come inside for dinner.” Wait for them to do it, and if they do not, go out into the yard and calmly lead them inside.
