Avoid Speeding on Freeways

The freeway was invented so people can travel fast. Most freeways have high speed limits and overtaking lanes.

Steps

  1. Follow the speed limit. Look for signs of it.
  2. Watch out for speed cameras or police cars. Many of them tend to catch speeding cars.
  3. Stay on the right lane(s) except when passing. Even if you are following the speed limit. The right lane(s) are used for slower vehicles. "Keep right except for passing" is also the law in some states, such as Kansas.
  4. Slow down if you are going to exit the freeway.
  5. Pull over if you need to do an emergency. Most freeways tend to have emergency lanes, or shoulders, to pull over in case of emergency.

Tips

  • Use cruise control to maintain your speed so you can avoid subconsciously going over the speed limit.
  • Driving too slow can result in an infraction for impeding traffic, so aim for the maximum safe speed you can drive or the speed limit, whichever is lower.
  • If your car has a OBD2 computer, consider getting a compatible HUD (heads up display) that will project your speed onto the windshield of your car. You will be able to monitor your speed without taking your eyes off the road.

Velocitization is a slow motion visual phenomenon, caused by the inner ear. Drivers coming off of high speeds will find the slower speed a lot slower, due to this visual hallucination. Also, the velocitized driver will interact poorly with urban traffic, once off of the highway.

Warnings

  • Speed limits can vary and be lower than the posted limit due to conditions.
