Avoid Wild Pokémon in a Pokémon Game

Your Pokémon are low on health and you need to get back to a Pokémon Center right away before they faint. But how do you get past the wild Pokémon lurking in the grass ready to make your Pokémon faint? Try these easy steps, and see if they work!

Steps

Gen. II and Up

  1. Attach a Cleanse Tag to your Lead Pokémon (The Pokémon in the front of your party). Cleanse Tags act as permanent Repels, stopping wild Pokémon that are a lower level than your Lead from appearing.
  2. If you don't have a Cleanse Tag, stock up on Repels, Super Repels or Max Repels. Repels work the same as Cleanse Tags, however they only last a certain number of steps.
    • Remember to use one before you enter the grass.
  3. Wild Pokémon who are of a lower level than your Lead Pokémon will not appear.
  4. Use another Repel before you take another step when it runs out.
  5. Give your Pokémon a smoke ball to escape without fail.

Alternative Method

  1. Face the grass. It should be on the next square in front of you.
  2. Select a Pokémon that knows the HM Cut and use the move in the Pokémon menu. Three squares of grass directly in front of you should disappear.
  3. Step into the grass-free area and repeat for every patch of grass.

Tips

  • Super Repels are the best value for your money. Max Repels keep Pokémon away for the longest time possible.
  • The Cut method doesn't work in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, or HeartGold & SoulSilver.
  • In the later Pokémon games, when your Repel wears off, should you have more in your bag, you will be asked if you want to immediately use another without having to go into the bag, which makes it much easier.
  • Put your fastest Pokémon at the top of your party so that you have a better chance of escaping successfully.
  • If you are a lower level than the traveling legendaries (Usually levels 40-60), then the repel method may not work if they are in the same route as you. But don't worry, they will immediately run, unless your leading Pokémon's ability prevents it. (NOTE: They will always run in X and Y).

Things You'll Need

  • A Cleanse Tag
  • Repels/Super Repels/Max Repels (If you don't have access to a Cleanse Tag)
  • A Pokémon that knows or can learn Cut (Alternative Method)
