Back Up a Horse Trailer for Parking

Backing up a trailer is confusing, especially as you have to steer the tow vehicle “opposite” to where the trailer will go. Here are some tips for easy parking!

Steps

  1. Find a ground guide. It's best to bring someone along whenever towing horses, but if you don't have anyone to help, you can simply ask a person fairly experienced in parking horse trailers to help. Using a horse trailer can be dangerous.
  2. Position your hands at the bottom of the steering wheel. Turn in the direction you want the trailer to go - you should agree on this spot with your ground guide before starting. Ideally, this spot should be large and hopefully clear to prevent any crashes.
  3. Remember to check your mirrors. Not doing so could result in colliding with an object.
  4. If you are not sure about what you are doing and it is safe, unload the horse before you park. This way, if you do manage to mess up, the horse will be safe.

Tips

  • Check your mirrors, always.
  • There are many DVDs and books that can help you with towing. Get one from your own country as towing laws differ.
  • In some countries, you can take lessons in towing or you may have to pass an additional test to tow on the road; but this is not a necessity in some places.

Warnings

  • If you can't understand your ground guide, turn off the vehicle and speak with him/her. Not understanding the guide could result in a severe accident.

Things You'll Need

  • A ground guide (if possible)
