Be a Master of Stealth

Create Stealth Shoes is an incredibly hard but useful skill that can really come in handy at times. Stealth can be thought of as being sneaky and dishonest - sometimes it is, but that's not the type of stealth you should aim for. If you want to learn how to be a master of the "good" kind of stealth, then you've come to the right place!

Steps

  1. Don't ever give too much away. You might be thinking that Poke Around Quietly and being secretive is all there is to be stealthy, but there are quite a lot of other things to it. For example, if you never give too much away, you decrease the risk of anybody finding out any of your plans or surprising you. So when you're talking to somebody, don't talk too much about anything that you want to be kept quite low key. If you do happen to tell someone something, make sure they're the kind of person you can trust.
  2. Practice being quiet, in all different kinds of situations, hard and easy. Try sneaking up and surprising your little sister while she's watching TV, try walking in a corridor without making any sound at all, try standing still and just being as silent as you can. Learn to walk softly and evenly, and to keep your breathing quiet, not panting all over the place. It may take some practice if you're clumsy and noisy, but this is something that anybody can learn if they try hard enough.
  3. Stealth isn't being good at hide and seek. Stealth is being able to move from location to location undetected, but this doesn't mean that if you've been in the same place 20 seconds you need to sprint out into the open. Stealth is where subjects in the area are unaware that you are anywhere near the location, having someone know you are hiding somewhere and is looking for you is not the same thing, though this is seen as part of the skill of mastering stealth as if detected should be able to slip away seamlessly.
  4. Be creative in your Create a Sneaking Suit, use concealment to cover from the line of sight of other people, use camouflage to blend in with your surroundings so you can lie in plain sight and not be spotted and lastly use your senses. Be careful what you're standing on and how much noise it makes. Be careful about how you smell; are you using too much deodorant? Does it smell unnatural? Be careful of what you do. Move in time to the wind and other repetitive noises and lastly be patient it may take hours to move only a few hundred meters, but make a mistake and you could end up a lot worse than just bored out your brains.
  5. Learn to creep, this is when you Crawl use your feet and hands, but keep your body off the ground

Tips

  • Be aware of the surface you are moving on.
  • If you think you are seen don't move right away.
  • Move fluently and move along with your surroundings for maximum stealth.
  • Also remember to run/walk on the balls of your feet.
  • It's not a good idea to bring with you a mobile phone/iPod as the light of the screen can easily give your position away.
  • You may want to choose someone/something to confide in. It can get difficult keeping things to yourself, and it's good to talk about your feelings with people. If you can trust a friend, try chatting to them. Or you might want to write everything down-- but keep it well hidden!
  • Try to use soft sole shoes while sneaking.
  • Before performing stealth be sure to check the area where you are performing stealth. And take time to think about what type of camouflage you need for your environment.
  • For extra good practice, try sneaking up on things with better hearing. E.g. A dog, cat, or squirrel.
  • In the house, if you are walking on a wooden floor try to edge along the wall as sometimes the floor might creak or make noise due to your body weight, try to distribute your body weight by crawling. For outdoors, don't go on any dead leaves or branches as the make enormous crunching sounds, and try to walk on solid ground or anything solid (tree roots, concrete etc, etc)
  • Think care about your gear. Wearing a bright blue T-shirt with bells all over it and flared, pocketed jeans that could get caught on branches is not the best idea. Try tight clothing and colors that hide you-- if you're out at night, try dark blue, but avoid black, it will reveal the human silhouette so go for a mix of mediums, like gray black and dark blue.. If you're in a garden or some place like that, dress in green or/and brown.
  • Another tip that I have picked up is to keep a tool of distraction with you. Even if it is just a small pebble, it is a great thing to have if you think that you've been spotted. Just toss the pebble at something to make a noise that will distract your enemy (or friend)long enough so that you can get away. Also, it is not a bad idea to bring a Pocket Flashlight with you if you are being stealthy in the dark. If you think that you've been spotted, quickly shine the light into the eyes of the person that is catching on to you and then make a stealthy getaway while they are blinded.
  • Try practicing everything with a friend. They can tell you if you're being quiet enough or not. You can set up a stealth obstacle course (this is good for testing if you are noticeable or not, but remember for real stealth is local subjects being unaware of your presence completely.
  • If you are sneaking around the house at night, wear thick socks. It minimizes noise that would usually come from your bare feet slapping the floor, unless you have carpet.
